What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health & Safety Officer position at Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians?
POSITION SUMMARY
The Health & Safety Officer is responsible for identifying any potential or real hazards and/or safety concerns within the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians workforce and work locations and implementing effective measures to prevent and mitigate them. This will include evaluating the effectiveness of safety and health policies and procedures, developing and revising policies and procedures as necessary to ensure effectiveness, conducting workplace safety inspections, providing instruction on safety related topics, and enforcing Tribal safety and health policies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conduct regular assessments and safety audits to identify potential hazards and risks within the Tribal workforce and work locations.
- Continuously evaluate current safety and health related policies and procedures for effectiveness and efficiency.
- Revise and/or develop additional policies and procedures as necessary to ensure an ongoing successful, comprehensive safety program.
- Implement and enforce effective strategies aimed at reducing or eliminating the frequency and severity of work-related injuries or illnesses.
- Provide expert advice and guidance to employees and leadership on safety and health matters and procedures.
- Ensure that all Tribal adopted safety policies, procedures, standards, and regulations are enforced and followed.
- Conduct reviews of incidents, accidents, and near-misses, and make recommendations for corrective actions aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.
- Prepare summary reports for the Tribal Council on injury and illness rates, safety violations, and recommendations for workplace improvements.
- Develop and deliver training programs for employees and leadership on safety and health related topics.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of safety incidents, inspections, and training.
- Maintain an inventory of safety and health equipment and supplies, ensuring they are properly maintained and available for use at the various Tribal workplaces.
- Coordinate and conduct emergency preparedness drills and ensure that all Tribal employees are aware of emergency procedures and protocols as outlined in the Tribe’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program
- Assist with the ongoing development and implementation of the Tribe’s occupational health and safety code ensuring alignment with tribal values and legal standards, to foster a safe and healthy work environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management, or similarly related field; equivalent experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of one-year, full-time experience in a similar role, preferably in a like-sized environment.
- Possession of OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Training Certificate, or ability to obtain within first year of employment.
- Knowledge of relevant safety regulations and guidelines, such as those found in OSHA 29 CFR and CalOSHA Title 8.
- Strong knowledge and ability to use Microsoft® Suite programs, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with Tribal members, Tribal employees, cooperators, and stakeholders.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license, and reliable transportation.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working within a federally recognized Native American tribal organization.
- Possession of an OSHA Safety and Health Fundamentals Certification.
- Possession of First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
NATIVE PREFERENCE
Preference in hiring is given to either the most qualified applicant or a Native American candidate who meets the minimum qualifications. When two (2) or more Native American candidates have comparable qualifications, the following order of preference shall apply: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; (4) All other documented Native Americans; (5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Native preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
Salary : $83,900 - $105,900
