What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Planner position at SHN?
SHN is a consulting firm meeting the engineering, geologic, and environmental needs of communities in Southern Oregon and Northern California. We live where we work, giving clients extra assurance that our projects are designed and constructed to last and work well.
Our Planning Department is growing. We are looking for an entry-level planner to join the team with a promising future of growth and professional development.
What kind of work would I be doing?
The Staff Planner assists the associate and senior planners in helping rural communities in northern California and southern Oregon with both municipal and private development planning services. As a municipal planner they provide municipalities with both current and advance planning tasks. As a planner for private development, they are expected to find a pathway for obtaining successful entitlements for well thought-out projects. This role requires people skills for developing agency relationships and keeping track of deadlines for multiple projects in a timely manner. It is expected that the person filling this position will understand and act consistently with the values and culture of SHN.
Compensation & Benefits:

What are SHN’s minimum qualifications?
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- A minimum of 3 years’ hands-on-experience with general technical writing and editing
- Experience in processing permit applications
- Strong communication, writing skills and report preparation skills
- Authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
- Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving clearance
What additional knowledge and skills would make me a great candidate?
- Ability to maintain a good relationship with co-workers, project managers, agencies, partners, applicants, and potential clients
- Desire to understand who SHN’s existing clients are and how they may benefit from the planning services we provide
- Knowledge of California Land Use and Planning Law, as well as CEQA and NEPA
- Authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
- Willingness and ability to travel to other SHN regions and offices
