SCI 270 – Introduction to Social Determinants of Health (1 credit)
This seminar is for students who are part of Shoreline’s Post Baccalaureate Services for the Health Professions and who are preparing for medical school. These students have completed a bachelor’s degree and are at Shoreline Community College to take or retake pre-med courses. See additional information HERE
The focus of Science 270 will be on finding and navigating community resources and best practices to support patients and families through discussions, activities, and readings to understand the social factors that impact someone’s ability to receive healthcare and how to help. Students will learn about geographic, economic, and demographic barriers. Class materials from previous offerings are available to the new instructor to use.
Required Education & Experience:- Master’s degree from an accredited institution
- Experience in teaching in a higher education environment or experience teaching adults
Knowledge of:
- Microsoft Office programs
- Learning management systems, and other appropriate instructional technology
- Social Determinants of Health theory and practice
Skill in:
- Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of Post Baccalaureate Services for the Health Professions (courses are housed in “SCIENCE”)
- Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
- Effective teaching practices, including how to structure and support collaborative learning.
- Adapting to a variety of teaching situations with students from diverse backgrounds/abilities
- Contributing to equity and inclusion by fostering a climate of multicultural appreciation and awareness
- Incorporating a variety of creative teaching methods to address different learning styles
- Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College
- Developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently
- Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online) operations, with the option for some assignments to be completed in an online environment based on program or area needs. For remote (online) instruction, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. For on-campus in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Faculty typically use computers and media equipment in the work environment.
Terms of Employment & Salary
- This is a part-time, non-tenured, quarter-to-quarter assignment.
- Salary placement is determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with related degrees.
