Position Summary:

The Mechanic is responsible for performing routine and preventative maintenance, diagnosing, repairing, and ensuring the overall safety and operational efficiency of district vehicles, including buses, vans, and other transportation equipment. This position requires technical expertise in vehicle systems, along with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with the transportation team to maintain fleet readiness, minimize downtime, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a formal mechanic training program or equivalent experience.
  • Valid Arizona driver's license; ability to obtain a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with the appropriate endorsements within a reasonable period if required.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification preferred.
  • At least two years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, preferably in a school bus or fleet environment.
  • Strong diagnostic skills with the ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine systems, as well as electrical, braking, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Possess a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations, including those specific to school transportation.

Core Job Functions:

Vehicle Maintenance and Repairs:

  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on all district vehicles, including buses, vans, and other transportation equipment.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical components, fuel systems, exhaust systems, and air conditioning.
  • Conduct safety inspections on buses and other district vehicles to ensure compliance with state and federal safety regulations.
  • Troubleshoot and identify mechanical issues, using diagnostic equipment and hand tools.
  • Perform tire rotations, alignments, and other routine vehicle maintenance tasks.
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, and parts used.

Fleet Management and Efficiency:

  • Assist with managing the district’s vehicle fleet, including scheduling regular maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintain up-to-date inventory of parts and tools, and order supplies as needed to ensure timely repairs and maintenance.
  • Work with the Transportation Supervisor to develop and implement effective maintenance schedules and procedures to minimize downtime and extend the life of vehicles.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensure that all vehicles meet state and federal safety standards and regulations, including the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) guidelines for school buses.
  • Assist in preparing vehicles for state inspections and ensuring compliance with transportation department requirements.
  • Follow proper safety protocols, including wearing protective gear and maintaining a safe and clean work environment.
  • Stay up-to-date on safety recalls and industry standards to ensure all vehicles are operating optimally.

Emergency Repairs and Troubleshooting:

  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and vehicle malfunctions during routes or trips, providing quick and efficient repairs to minimize disruption to transportation services.
  • Provide on-site troubleshooting for any issues that arise during daily operations.

Documentation and Recordkeeping:

  • Maintain accurate records of vehicle maintenance, inspections, repairs, and parts inventory.
  • Complete work orders, service records, and other required documentation for compliance with district policies and auditing procedures.
  • Assist with preparing reports on vehicle status, repair costs, and maintenance schedules for the Transportation Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong mechanical skills and knowledge of vehicle systems (diesel, gasoline, electrical, and hydraulic).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose complex mechanical problems.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools, diagnostic equipment, and other mechanic tools.
  • Knowledge of school transportation regulations, safety standards, and compliance requirements.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members, drivers, and transportation personnel.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, carrying, bending, and crouching.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs., such as heavy vehicle parts or tools.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, and work in various positions for extended periods.
  • Work in conditions that may involve exposure to hazardous materials, loud noises, dust, and fumes.
  • Occasionally required to work outdoors in various weather conditions and work with vehicles in the field.

Working Conditions:

  • The work is primarily performed in a mechanic shop environment but may require occasional on-site repairs in the field.
  • The role may involve occasional evening or weekend work, especially in the case of emergency repairs.
  • The position may require extended hours during peak maintenance or fleet inspection periods.
  • Safety equipment (e.g., gloves, goggles, ear protection, etc.) must be worn while performing certain tasks.
