SPECIAL NEEDS BUS AIDE

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is 7.5 hours a day, 4 days a week, and involves working with and ensuring the safety of special needs students of all ages (Preschool through High School) while being transported to and from school. Must have knowledge of the Bus Route daily and be aware of and adhere to all District policies and procedures. Must be CPR and First Aide Certified and be able to interact with each child's needs in an emergency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform equipment checks and ensure the safety conditions of wheelchair lifts and strap-down belts for wheelchairs.
• Ensure that each student riding in a seat is always correctly secured with a seat belt.
• Attend to the unique needs of each child on the bus, including custodial care duties such as pushing wheelchairs or similar personal care functions.
• Escort students to the school Health Tech, etc., as necessary
• Required to interact with students of various ages and disabilities
• Monitor student behavior and conduct on the bus and help maintain discipline
• Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with parents, students, and staff
• Be professional and respectful with others both inside and outside the District
• Assist the Bus Driver in keeping the bus clean and safe
• Follow directions given by the Bus Driver promptly and accurately
• Take notes and keep records as required
• Maintain confidentiality at all times
• Other duties as assigned within the area of job responsibility

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

Preferably 3-6 months of prior training or job experience of a similar nature working with Special Needs children.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands : occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and / or crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 90% sitting, 5% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed under extreme temperatures and conditions with some exposure to the risk of injury and / or illness.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employees may be subject to travel, odors, dust, poor ventilation, workspace restrictions, blood-borne pathogens, and loud noises. Employees may be required to lift or exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects occasionally, up to 30 pounds to move objects frequently, and up to 30 pounds of force to move objects constantly. Employees must also pass the Physical Performance Test in accordance with the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety and Arizona Administrative Code R-13-13-102.
