Sibelco is a world leading producer of high purity quartz, which is an indispensable ingredient in the production of semiconductors, photovoltaic cells, and high intensity quartz lightbulbs. Our mines and processing facilities near Spruce Pine, NC have been in operation for over a century. Due to the strong demand growth for our products, we are building on this legacy to invest in growing our business and our world class team.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Hot Chlorination Scientist to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will be responsible for innovative investigation and development in the refinement process, optimizing hot chlorination processes to produce ultra-high-purity quartz. This role involves conducting experiments, analyzing data, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve process efficiency and product quality. This requires stepwise development from fundamental, laboratory and Pilot Plant scale to final industrial implementation.

Responsibilities

• Lead, collaborate and conduct mid- to long-term Technology and Innovation (T&I) projects to investigate variables affecting the purification of silica, specifically, the removal of impurities via hot chlorination methods. This also involves collaboration with other areas, such as mineral processing, chemical leaching, etc
• Review existing literature for relevant information to inform experimental strategies and interpret results
• Prepare technical reports and presentations
• Understand and expand on new knowledge to propose specific advanced research activities
• Collaborate with, advise, and mentor junior staff including laboratory technicians and chemists
• Ensure quality and timely delivery of project objectives within predefined scope and budget
• Participate in research talks, networking events to represent Sibelco at scientific conferences
• Identify relevant partnerships in academia and/or industry
  
  
  

Qualifications

• Master of Science or PhD in Chemistry, Material Science, or research-related fields. Proven experience in Hot Chlorination is preferred
• More than 5 years in academic and/or industrial research with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Knowledge and ability to apply Surface Chemistry, Leaching, Hydrometallurgy, or related concepts to current challenges
• English – Advanced verbal and writing
• Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations related to chemical processes
