School-Based Mental Health Counselor/LSW
Emerson Primary / Longfellow Primary
Reports to: Principal
Job Objectives:
The school-based counselor provides short-term behavioral health services and crisis intervention as needed. Responsible for collaborating with students and families in developing an individualized plan that will specifically address identified areas of concern. Responsible for assisting students and their families in understanding ways to effectively manage symptoms and behaviors attributed to the identified behavioral health diagnosis(es). Assists families in effectively addressing complex personal and environmental difficulties, which interfere with effective social functioning. Is able to work independently, is well-organized and identifies opportunities to work collaboratively with other providers as warranted. The mental health counselor demonstrates and models effective interaction with students, families, and identified team members while providing excellent care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Informs clients of limits to confidentiality, rights regarding services delivered, and payment expectations.
- Performs diagnostic assessment, treatment planning, and psychotherapy services within scope of practice in collaboration with clients.
- Coordinates interventions with a multidisciplinary treatment team.
- Provides emergency consultation, assessment, and crisis intervention, in the building.
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with administration and other school and district staff.
- Develop individual service plans in coordination with the client and family.
- Provide behavioral health services including, but not limited to, individual and group psychotherapy, case management, and therapeutic behavioral support services.
- Integrates services and/or make referrals to appropriate professionals or outside agencies as indicated.
- Participates in the assessment of program needs and peer review, as well as cooperate with performance improvement objectives.
- Attend staff meetings, court hearings, etc. based on the needs of clients.
- Provide connections to community resources to support students and their families.
- Facilitate district and building-specific programming.
- Provide consultation with faculty and district administrators on shared initiatives.
- Serve as a link between school and family for the district through home visits and other means.
- May provide social-emotional instruction and support for building initiatives.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, in-service training.
- Utilize Trauma Informed care when appropriate with clients/students.
- Maintain productive and professional relationships with school personnel and other local agency staff.
- Work effectively within a school setting following their rules and regulations and following the lead of the school administrator when necessary.

- Masters: Counseling (Required); Masters: Social Work (Required)
- Active Ohio Certification/License Requirements:
- LISW - Licensed Independent Social Worker - Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage & Family Therapist Board, LPCC - Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor - Counselor, Social Worker and Marriage & Family Therapist Board
- Preferred
- Experience with younger children.
- Experience with trauma-informed care.
- Be flexible to navigate the operations within a school.
