Job Title: Principal Data Scientist
Client: UHG / Optum Technology
Location: 100% Remote (Telecommute)
Compensation: $50/hr W2
Interview Process: 3 rounds via video (Hiring Manager, Team Member, Department VP)
Work Hours: 9 AM - 5 PM (adjustable based on individual needs); team operates across multiple time zones.

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly analytical and strategic Principal Data Scientist to support five key business segments. These segments collectively drive $330M in marketing-generated revenue, $40M in HSA contributions, $240M in medical cost savings, and 1K MQLs. The role will support 25 B2B and B2C products and play a critical part in optimizing marketing performance through data-driven decision-making.

This position requires expertise in advanced analytics, machine learning, and statistical modeling to uncover customer insights, enhance segmentation, and predict key behaviors to drive engagement and conversions. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with marketing, product, and data engineering teams to ensure data accuracy, design impactful experiments, and develop models for targeting, personalization, and campaign optimization.

Additionally, this role will be instrumental in future-proofing the data and analytics environment as marketing initiatives expand. The Principal Data Scientist will serve as an SME on marketing data, data pipeline development & optimization, and partner with stakeholders to align data requirements with business priorities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop predictive models and consumer segmentation models using demographic, psychographic, econometric, and statistical data to enable personalized marketing.

  • Migrate and update existing models into a new environment incorporating a new third-party data source.

  • Collaborate with marketing stakeholders to optimize campaigns, apply customer segmentation, and drive personalization strategies.

  • Perform rigorous data analysis to extract key insights for marketing, product, and client relations teams.

  • Work with imperfect data, applying statistical and rule-based approaches to clean and validate data.

  • Ensure the availability of enriched data sets for campaign performance measurement, self-serve analytics, audience segmentation, and predictive modeling.

  • Investigate data discrepancies and anomalies in marketing datasets, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with data engineers to improve data reliability and accessibility.

  • Identify trends in member behavior and engagement to drive actionable insights.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Minimum 10 years of Hands-on Experience required.

  • Data Pipeline Development: Experience in building and optimizing data pipelines.

  • Cloud Services & Databricks: Hands-on experience working in Databricks and cloud-based environments.

  • Programming Proficiency: Strong skills in Python or R for statistical modeling and machine learning.

  • SQL Expertise: Experience with SQL database querying and data manipulation/preparation.

  • Marketing Analytics Knowledge: Experience in creating and maintaining data models tailored for marketing analytics use cases.

  • Machine Learning Expertise: Understanding of ML frameworks, algorithms, and their implementation.

  • Data Visualization: Familiarity with tools for presenting insights effectively.

  • ML Model Development in Databricks: Proven experience in building and deploying machine learning models in Databricks.
