REPORTS TO:  Superintendent of Schools or Designee

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Salary range 9at: $102,786 - $120,924, 50 weeks per year position-full time. Hours during summer and school breaks may vary, as determined by District administration.

The District operates 12 schools with an operating budget of $113 million with a 35% fund balance. Nestled in one of Midland’s established, walkable neighborhoods, Siebert Elementary is a vibrant K-5 school with a reputation for excellence. Students at Siebert enjoy a robust educational experience, blending top-tier academics with enriching extracurriculars like robotics, Battle of the Books, Chess Club, Writing Club, and Girls on the Run. Siebert’s dedicated staff of educators (many hired within the past decade) create a caring environment where every student can achieve their highest potential. Siebert also boasts a supportive school community, including an active PTO and an engaged network of parent volunteers. With so many amazing things happening in our building, it’s no wonder why our staff say It’s a great day to be a Bulldog!

 

POSITION SUMMARY:  Midland Public Schools is seeking an innovative, transformative, progressive, and collaborative leader to serve as the Principal of Siebert Elementary. This position reports to the Superintendent Team and is responsible for all aspects of educational programming, professional development, school safety, staffing, evaluation, budgeting, and management of the building. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, School Administration, or similar
  • Must meet or be willing to meet the State School Administrator’s continuing education requirements
  • Evidence of successful experience as a teacher and instructional leadership roles
  • Knowledge of current education research and best practices
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership, communications, and team building
  • Successful experiences in school administration roles with knowledge of school law and legal requirements of schools

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced education degree (beyond Master’s degree)
  • State of Michigan administrator endorsement
  • State of Michigan teacher certification
  • Evidence of successful experience as a school administrator
  • Knowledge of and experience with organizational change models, implementation science, and program evaluation
  • Knowledge of and experience dealing with student disciplinary issues, school safety, and various student services-related matters

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct and manage instructional programs and supervise operations and personnel; provide leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service; oversee compliance with district policies, success of instructional programs, and operation of all campus activities to include supporting the International Baccalaureate philosophy. The Principal will work collaboratively to support the district vision: Lead with respect, trust, and courage. Ensure an equitable, collaborative, and inclusive culture. Enable all to achieve success.  

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

 

Instructional Management

  • Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure that program activities are related to program outcomes and use findings to take corrective actions.
  • Regularly consult Administration about planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of campus education program; include students and community representatives when appropriate.
  • Support International Baccalaureate philosophies and attend International Baccalaureate training as required.
  • Oversee teaching instructionally using the International Baccalaureate framework.

School Morale

 

  • Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals.
  • Foster collegiality and team building among staff members; encourage their active involvement in decision-making process.
  • Provide for two-way communication with the superintendent, staff, students, parents, and community.
  • Communicate and promote expectations for high-level performance to staff and students; recognize excellence and achievement.
  • Ensure the effective and quick resolution of conflicts.

School Improvement

 

  • Build a common vision for school improvement with staff; direct planning activities and put programs in place with staff to ensure attainment of school’s mission. 
  • Identify, analyze, and apply research findings to promote school improvement.
  • Develop and set annual performance objectives using the MICIP process.
  • Develop, maintain, and use information systems and records necessary to show progress on performance objectives.

Personnel Management

 

  • Collaborate with Human Resources to interview, select, and orient new staff.
  • Define expectations for staff performance regarding instructional strategies, classroom management, and communication with the public. 
  • Observe employee performance, conduct observations, and facilitate evaluation conferences utilizing District evaluation systems.
  • Assign campus personnel.
  • Make recommendations to the superintendent on termination, suspension, or non-renewal of employees assigned to campus.
  • Confer with staff regarding their professional growth; work with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals.

Management of Fiscal, Administrative, and Facilities Functions

  • Develop campus budgets based on documented program needs, estimated enrollment, personnel, and other fiscal needs; keep programs within budget limits; maintain fiscal control; accurately report fiscal information.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required including accurate and timely reports of maximum attendance to requisition textbooks.
  • Collaborate with Operations to manage use of school facilities and supervise the maintenance of facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and safe campus.

Student Management

 

  • Work with faculty and students to facilitate a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.
  • Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed, and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Conduct conferences about student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  • Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior; serve as a role model for all campus staff.

School or Community Relations

 

  • Articulate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness of school and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Other

 

  • Comply with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Adhere to the District’s safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of District business.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of walking and interacting with students and/or district employees in the specific work site assigned (classroom or office setting).
  • Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise and evaluate the performance of staff assigned to campus including teacher(s), paraprofessional(s),  administrative assistant(s), etc.

  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing; move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment; repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer terminal possible; occasional district-wide travel; occasional state-wide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; possible biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
