SUMMARY
Protect the assets of the company through a process of risk identification, risk assessment, response, monitoring and controlling, reporting and continuous improvement of processes. The incumbent in this position is responsible for planning, directing and administering the Company’s risk, safety, loss control, property/casualty, and workers’ compensation insurance programs from a pre and post-loss basis which includes negotiation and settlement of claims, litigation, and coordination of loss information. This position will develop employee/guest safety programs and processes to comply with Federal Regulations (OSHA), State (Cal-OSHA) and Booth Creek Risk Management Guidelines. Directly responsible for Accident/Injury Investigations. As a customer focused organization, a crucial part of each employee’s job is to get and keep guests.
GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Ensures that all employees receive the training, support, guidance feedback and resources necessary.
- May assist with the establishment of departmental standards, guidelines, and objectives and maintains other administrative processes to ensure proper planning, efficient operation of departments and successful achievement of resort goals.
- Maintains and enhances a guest focused culture in all areas of responsibility.
- Maintains schedules in compliance with regulations and authorities having jurisdiction; manages responsibilities in compliance with resort safety policies.
- Maintains current status on legal issues and technological advances with impact on the industry; maintains awareness of scope and progress of competition.
- Effective communication skills with all levels of employees, guests, and all other outside contacts.
- Familiarity with state and federal environmental standards and OSHA regulations.
- Understanding of corporate and resort specific policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Develops, implements, directs and monitors risk management initiatives and standards, manuals, guidelines, and objectives, and maintains administrative processes such as budget planning to ensure proper and efficient operations at the resort.
- Directs loss control and safety programs, training and committees to ensure consistency in mitigation and prevention of exposures to risk.
- Manages property and casualty claims processing which includes maintenance of all files, monitoring, allocating costs, file closure and overall services in order to ensure that all claims are administered according to Company policy and carrier requirements.
- Manages the return to work program for injured employees receiving workers’ compensation..
- Analyzes and classifies exposures to risk as to frequency and potential severity, and measures financial impact of risk on company.
- Selects appropriate techniques and implements programs, procedures, guidelines, plans and policies to minimize loss, such as avoidance, loss control and reduction, risk retention analyses, grouping of exposure units and risk transfer.
- Performs safety inspections of the work site on a daily/weekly basis and conveys findings to the appropriate manager. Identifies potential hazards and unsafe work practices at the resort and provide correction action.
- Participates in insurance negotiations, selection of insurance brokers and plans, policy renewals, claims, issuance of certificates, budget planning and risk minimization programs.
- Investigates and documents incidents in cooperation with resort ski patrol to ensure compliance with internal Company guidelines, insurance company requirements, and OSHA standards.
- Works with Human Resource’s personnel to develop, enhance, implement and monitor pre-employment screening, including: drug and alcohol, criminal background, motor vehicle, fiduciary and credit checks.
- Directs property and casualty litigation in conjunction with the insurance company claims representative, defense counsel and internal Company counsel.
- Maintains loss history for all bodily injuries and property damage claims in order to account for and allocate to the various categories of deductibles.
- Directs managers to ensure the maintenance of chemical records used at resorts and SPCC, SDS, and Right to Understand statutory compliance.
- Ensures that all lease holders, subcontractors, event sponsors and other outside vendors have insurance in accordance with resort policy and that they have provided current certificates of insurance. Reviews contracts for these activities relating to insurance and exposures to risk.
- Develops, implements and monitors a system of releases of liability and acknowledgements including: special event, activity, season pass and rentals. Includes implementation and use of integrated system of warnings and education through the use of signage and collateral materials.
- Develops, implements and monitors in cooperation with resort ski patrols and safety ski personnel, a Company-wide system of risk mitigation techniques and strategies including: padding/shielding, fencing, signage and marking/warning activities.
- Assists with developing and executing resort disaster plans and audits these plans regularly.
- Serves as custodian of records ensuring that all records used by the resort are accessible, properly stored and up-to-date.
- Keeps abreast of new and existing Federal and State laws and regulations related to self-insured insurance programs.
- Contribute to team effort by participating in Job Sharing, assuming responsibility for the cleanliness of the resort and safety of guests and employees; participating in safety meetings; accepting diverse assignments; maintain a positive and friendly attitude and demeanor in all internal and external interactions.
- Meet service level objectives and department goals as set forth by immediate supervisor.

RESPONSIBILITIES TO SAFETY
- Protect the safety of self, co-workers, and Sierra-at-Tahoe guests at all times.
- Report any potentially harmful equipment or situations to the immediate supervisor without delay.
- Report safety-related accidents and incidents at once to immediate supervisor.
- Follow all company and department safety policies and procedures.
- Operate equipment in a safe manner that will not lead to injury of self or others.
- Drive in accordance with the law and Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort policies.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
A thorough and in-depth knowledge of property and casualty, surety and fidelity insurance programs and bonding, as well as other alternative risk finance and transfer methods.
Thorough and in-depth knowledge of ski resort operations.
Ability to use independent judgement in decisions that influence risk and safety programs, employment issues, property and casualty claims processing and other financially and strategically sensitive situations.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Broad knowledge of Federal and State laws, regulations and safety compliance programs required.
This knowledge and these abilities are typically acquired through a college degree and a minimum of 5 years experience in progressively responsible safety, insurance and risk management positions. ARM preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
