Shift : 7 : 30am - 5 : 30pm
Job Description : PATIENT POPULATION :
The patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.
POSITION SUMMARY :
Under the direction of the department Leader(s) and the RN, the Medical Assistant carries out all assignments given by the Director and Physicians. Is responsible for adhering to all Standards of Nursing Care and for promoting teamwork among coworkers.
The primary purpose of this position is to carry out all assignments given relative to the safe and efficient operation of the Cancer Treatment Center (CTC) and the care of CTC patients and in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern the facility and Medical Assistants, and the operational policies and procedures.
The Medical Assistant prepares exam rooms, provides point-of-care testing, performs technical services within their Scope of Practice and collects lab specimens as directed. The Medical Assistant also provides patients with health information as directed by the physician, and performs other patient care related duties as requested.
Must be able to work normal / scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act.

EDUCATION / TRAINING / EXPERIENCE :

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have, as a minimum, one (1) year of experience as a Medical Assistant. Individual must be bilingual in English / Spanish.
Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the patients served. Must be knowledgeable of medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to the CTC. Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with CTC staff assisting in the care of patients. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies / personnel, and the general public.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic computer skills.
LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONS :
To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess, as a minimum, certification as a Back Office (Clinical) Medical Assistant with Phlebotomy training. Must have and maintain BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care. Must pass Interpreter Skill Test within 6 months of hire and serve as certified interpreter.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions :
- Indicates Essential Function
- Obtains and accurately documents patient’s chief complaint and vital signs in accordance with SVMC policy.
- Assists with administrative duties as requested, including scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records and physician billing, completion of insurance forms, jury letters, and FMLA paperwork.
- Performs approved procedures and collects and properly labels laboratory specimens from patients upon receipt of written orders.
- Prepares exam rooms between patient visits and sets up trays and kits for use by practitioner, consistent with the patient’s chief complaint and / or practitioner request.
- Provides patient or patient’s parent / guardian / caregiver with all required information sheets / health education materials / resource / consent forms relative to the procedure or current examination, per the practitioner’s order.
- Is a trained electronic health records super user and assists physician with completion of documentation and order entry.
- Ensures coordination of patient care through tracking of ordered ancillary testing and specialty care.
- Maintains confidentiality of all patient care information, ensures patient care is provided in privacy and that patients are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity and respect.
- Participates in the following activities as requested : development and review of CTC policies, Performance Improvement and Quality Assurance projects, CTC-specific committees, and preparation and execution of facility, program, and / or site surveys.
- Ensures that work area is maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner, assists other CTC staff to maintain safety standards for the CTC, and follows all established guidelines regarding use of equipment and supplies.
- Ensures that all documentation reflects compliance with established policies and procedures, and that all patient reports from ancillary facilities are available for physician review.
