Sigmund Cohn Corp, a leading manufacturing company is seeking a Refining Lab Technician to add to their organization. The company manufactures products to support a variety of markets including medical device, aerospace, semi-conductor, automobile, and temperature sensing.
This position is primarily responsible for refining precious metals with the objective of re-cycling material to the production line. It is a hands-on, process-driven environment that involves working with various acids, glassware, and other laboratory apparatus to accomplish work assignments.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain chemical reagents as needed for the Laboratory and any other departments.
- Maintain stock levels in the chemical room.
- Refine raw or scrap metals of gold, palladium and platinum using wet chemistry as per company procedures.
- Prepare and maintain electrolytic refining apparatus.
- Operate analytical instruments such as AAS, ICP and XRF to determine and report the composition of gold and platinum-based alloys. This would include preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of the instruments.
- Report defective lab equipment and any unsafe working conditions to maintenance.
- Keep record of refined precious metals for inventory purposes.
- Maintain sanitary laboratory including equipment and glassware.
- Coordinate the disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes with designated outside waste treatment facility.
- Maintain a high level of safety within the department and anyone who interacts with department and support all safety initiatives.
- Support chemical needs of other departments and assist team with any chemical spill clean-up.
- Inspect and maintain the inventory of chemicals and lab supplies including signing documents for incoming shipments and movement of materials to assigned storage areas.
- Interface with suppliers of chemical and lab equipment for quote, best price, quality, and delivery dates.
- Complete ad hoc projects, as necessary, when directed by the supervisor.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- BS or Associates Degree in Chemistry.
- 1-3 years of experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of chemistry and metallurgy fundamentals.
- Ability to operate analytical instruments such as AAS, XRF and SEM or willingness to learn.
- Capacity to interpret results and understand the concept of the instruments that generate them.
- Knowledge of basic statistics.
- Experience in sampling, assaying, and melting of precious metals either in high-grade or sweepings.
- Understanding of laboratory safety.
Ability to perform metallographic preparation of samples, etching and hardness testing or willingness to learn.
Computer skills, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel required.
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift objects up to 50 lbs.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
- Ability to work in team environment and independently with the highest level of integrity and discretion.
Compensation and Benefits
Ø Hours: M-F 8:00 am – 4:30pm
