The Assistive Technology Specialist will have the opportunity to perform assistive technology assessments and provide support for individuals with disabilities, with a particular focus on serving individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Populations may include those with sensory impairments, physical impairments, learning disabilities, or developmental disabilities.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in special education, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, physical therapy, or a related field (master’s preferred).
· Demonstrated experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired is required.
· Knowledge of screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), screen magnification, braille displays, and other blindness-related technologies.
· Experience with assistive technology for various disabilities preferred.
· RESNA certification preferred; candidates not certified will be expected to pursue and obtain certification.
· Must possess reliable transportation and valid auto insurance meeting TN state requirements.
· Health clearance (including TB test) and TBI fingerprinting required upon job offer.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- A personal vehicle and state required auto insurance is required for regular travel throughout the service area as needed.
- Completion of a background check, including state and federal registries, recognizing this person works with vulnerable populations.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct comprehensive assistive technology assessments, including those focused on visual impairments.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary AT team members.
- Research and stay updated on emerging technologies, particularly those for blindness and low vision.
- Write detailed evaluation reports and maintain accurate client documentation.
- Assist clients in identifying and accessing funding for AT equipment.
- Provide initial training for clients, including those who are blind or visually impaired, on assistive technology tools.
- Deliver community workshops and consultations (in-person/virtual).
- Maintain monthly logs and activity reports.
- Troubleshoot hardware/software issues and consult with the AT Technician when needed.
- Ensure all equipment and client data are cleaned, stored, and managed properly.
- Assist with workshop logistics and vendor communications.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Program director. This is done, be sure to consult with the AT Technician. Keep the program director informed.
- Help with initial training for VR clients on software and hardware.
- Other duties as assigned by the program director.
