Deputy Financial Officer

 

The Deputy Financial Officer, working closely with the CFO, will assist with the management of the accounting department, to include supervising staff, developing processes and procedures to ensure that appropriate financial strategies are in place to protect organizational assets, oversee financial accounting processes, reporting, and functions. This person will collaborate with the CFO and the Executive Leadership team to build a strong internal structure and positive working environment. The Deputy helps ensure that fiscal functions of the organization operate in accordance with regulatory and advisory organizations and in accordance with financial management techniques and practices appropriate within the nonprofit industry. 

 

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  •  Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, Master’s Degree or other industry certifications a plus
  • At least five years supervisory experience with increasing levels of responsibility, and a superb reputation among peers and co-workers for quality work, leadership, and successful outcomes.
  • Knowledge of grant contracts, language, and negotiation.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to provide clear communication with individuals of all levels.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Maintain relationships with external auditors, bankers and other financial institutions.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and Excel applications.
  • Must be committed to the mission, vision and values of the agency and will adhere to a high standard of ethics.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented and have the ability to deliver quality work on tight deadlines, with strong organization and priority setting skills both independently.
  • Physical exam including TB skin test/chest x-ray required prior to beginning work.

Job Responsibilities: Responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Develop and maintain effective communication and strong relationships with program management as appropriate to organizational goals, objectives, and overall operations.
  •   Provides strong leadership and fosters positive departmental work culture.
  •  Oversees the day-to-day operations of the accounting department to ensure timely and accurate work and supervises the accounting department staff, including coaching and evaluations.
  •  Operates as a member of the Executive Staff team & attends board meetings, and retreats.
  •  Monitors daily cash flow activity to ensure adequate working capital availability.
  •  Ensures the timely and efficient operations of A/P, A/R, purchasing, payroll, client billing, contract reporting and invoicing, and related accounting activities.
  •  Reviews and approves financial activity including adjusting journal entries, monthly balance sheet reconciliations, outstanding payables and receivables, and makes recommendations of account write offs to CFO.
  •  Facilitates monthly financial review meetings with program directors.
  •  Oversees month-end and year-end closing; maintains effective internal controls to assure safeguarding of assets and reliability of financial statements.
  •  Prepares monthly financial statements, including Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, Statement of Cash Flows, and others as requested.
  •  Ensures timeliness, accuracy and usefulness of financial and management reporting for funders, board of directors, bankers, and others as necessary.
  •  Other duties as assigned.

  • Acts as a model for appropriate work ethic, including standards of attendance, punctuality, preparedness, and attitude.
  •  Contribute to short- & long-term planning as a member of the executive leadership team.
