The Town of Signal Mountain is located on Walden’s Ridge at the southern end of the Cumberland Plateau. It takes its name from a promontory of land called Signal Point, which overlooks the Tennessee River Gorge and the City of Chattanooga. Signal Mountain is home to a progressive community of 8,834 citizens and is surrounded by natural beauty.
The Police Department strives to provide services that directly and positively impact the safety, security and quality of life of all citizens. It addresses a wide range of enforcement and service issues including active neighborhood patrol, traffic enforcement, drug detection and enforcement, investigations, call response, community services, and youth and community relations. The Department is comprised of sixteen full-time officers, a civilian clerk and an office administrator.
The Signal Mountain Police Department is seeking professional candidates for the position of Patrol Officer. Under the general direction of the Lieutenant, the Patrol Officer is responsible for protecting life and property, deterring criminal activity within the community, enforcing all town ordinances, laws and regulations of the State, responding to the needs of the general public and preserving the peace and fostering positive relations with the citizens and community.
The candidate must have:
- Minimum 21 years of age;
- High School Diploma / GED; preferably a BA or Associates in Criminal Justice
- Valid Tennessee Driver’s License or equivalent in state of residence is needed prior to employment;
- Applicants must pass background and driver history check; medical and physical exams, psychological/personality exam, as determined by a town designated psychologist and drug screen.
The Town offers a competitive entry level wage range of $52,864 - $59,208 annually, based on certifications, education and experience. The town offers a comprehensive benefit package, take home vehicle, $800 state salary supplement for training annually, $500/year clothing allowance and for holiday’s worked, 8 hours holiday pay plus 8 hours at time and a half.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Patrol, by whatever means necessary, the streets of the town, businesses, and residential areas to enforce Town Ordinances and State laws.
Respond to all service calls promptly; handle calls in an efficient, effective and professional manner.
Foster positive relations with citizens and community.
Complete all jobs related paperwork, including but not limited to reports, court documents, evidence documentation, and daily logs on computers.
Direct and control traffic, to include traffic enforcement and issuance of citations for violations.
Arrest suspects where probable cause has been established through investigation and/or issuance of arrest warrant.
Investigate crimes or suspected crimes not assigned to another officer; report findings both orally and in writing.
Testify in court and other legal proceedings.
Maintain and care of all applicable law enforcement equipment.
Serve as Officer in Charge in the absence of designated shift supervisor.
