Description: Set up and operate all types of tube bending and finishing machines, including numerically controlled equipment, to fabricate aircraft plumbing and plumbing templates.
Typical Responsibilities
Work in accordance with standard methods and procedures to set up and operate hydraulic, numerically controlled and manually operated tube bending machines to bend all types of tubing to specific shape.
Follow general instructions, recognized methods, standard set-up cards and specification sheet to set–up machine with proper radial, wiper and slide blocks and mandrels.
Mark tubing and insert in machine.
Position tubing, set and align blocks, make adjustments to assure tubing is properly held and to avoid machine markings, adjust hydraulic pressure settings.
Call or load program and perform test bend to prove proper adjustment.
Perform spring back test to determine overbend and stretch characteristics, make adjustments as required.
Operate numerically controlled equipment, utilizing a “V” probe to read the tubes shapes and dimensions into computer programmed equipment to store, correct data or to create disks, etc.
Check tube shape and length against template or part for accuracy of bend.
Utilize terminal accesses to make adjustments to program or machine adjustments.
Bend tubing by trial and error when standard set-up is not available, when fabricating or checking tubes against programmed data or templates when modifying existing plumbing installations.
Assemble hydraulic components such as hydraulic reservoirs, panels, pumps and modify such components under direction.
May also set-up and operate all other types of available machines and equipment to cut, bend, flare, burr, swage, bead, form or other wise fabricate a variety of types, shapes and sizes of tubing.
Pressure test assembled parts for defects and repair as necessary.
Occasionally bend tubing for initial installation or modifications and install in aircraft.
Refer complex or unusual problems to Working Leader or Supervisor.
Basic Qualifications:
Requires a broad knowledge of arithmetic involving decimals and fractions and its applications to detail drawings and the use of variable measuring instruments such as scales and micrometers. May require a short period of specialized training to learn plumbing fabrication methods and procedures, as well as, operation of numerically controlled machines.

Desired Skills:
Understand basic concepts of geometry, angles, straights, tangents etc. of a formed tube including the quality standards for ovality, nicks, scratches or dents, and familiar with flared and flareless end fittings, to Aerospace and military standards.
