As the Galley Assistant, you will be a vital member at one of our Alaskan processing facilities that will assist in preparations for serving meals for the whole crew. This position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the kitchen and the galley area. You will also be responsible for assisting cooks in the preparation of meal ingredients, helping other staff with unloading food items from delivery trucks, and washing and drying the utensils, dishes, and cookware.

Essential Functions/Qualifications

The responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Wash dishes and cookware, cleans tables and floors, empties trash.
  • Maintain a clean working environment.
  • Responsible for cleaning kitchen, kitchen equipment, and all dishes daily.
  • Clean the galley area after every meal.
  • Restock beverage machines and condiments on a regular basis as necessary.
  • Assist in organizing and securing the food storage lockers.
  • Assist with food and supplies inventory.
  • Assist with related special projects, as required.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain respectful professional relationships with other employees and service providers in a stressful environment.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure the kitchen and team are fully supported and successful.

  • Food Preparation: Proficiency in basic cooking techniques, such as chopping, slicing, and sautéing.
  • Sanitation: Knowledge of proper sanitation practices, including cleaning equipment, surfaces, and utensils.
  • Food Safety: Understanding of food safety regulations and procedures to prevent foodborne illness.
  • Inventory Management: Ability to assist with managing inventory levels of food supplies.
  • Customer Service: Basic customer service skills, such as providing friendly and courteous assistance to plant employees.

Interpersonal

  • Teamwork: Ability to work effectively with other galley staff to ensure efficient and efficient operations.
  • Communication: Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and nonverbal.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing work environments and tasks.
  • Positive Attitude: A positive and enthusiastic attitude towards work.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Proven experience helping in kitchen settings.
  • Sound knowledge of food safety standards and procedures.
  • 6 months' related experience in the Seafood industry or similar training/education.
  • SERV Safe certification preferred.
  • Previous experience in Seafood or Manufacturing preferred.

Work Environment and Schedule

The kitchen environment can be fast-paced and demanding, requiring individuals to work efficiently under pressure. It involves long hours, often including evenings and weekends. The work can be physically demanding, requiring standing for extended periods, lifting heavy objects, and working in hot and humid conditions. Position requires onsite presence at our Alaska Processing Facility, and the ability to travel, spending a significant amount of time during the season at our various locations and processing facilities in Alaska.

Physical Demands

Position is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Employees are frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

The employee is frequently required to set an example by consistently modeling ambitious standards of honesty and integrity. Presentation and sharing of information should be handled directly, appropriately, and helpfully. Maintains a reputation for honesty, confidentiality, reliability, and fairness. Is willing to admit mistakes and does not misrepresent him/herself for personal gain. Performs work with energy and drive; values planning, but will take quick, decisive action when an opportunity presents itself.
