PURPOSE

To establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill an anticipated vacancy and future vacancies (part-time) for the duration of the list, up to one year.

FILING DATE : Completed application must be submitted no later than 11 : 59 p.m. a week prior to the multiple choice exam. Late applications will not be accepted. Tentative test date : To be Determined.

TESTING PROCESS :

A) Multiple Choice Test = 40% weighting on final score

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications stated in the job posting by the application deadline in order to move forward in the testing process. Those with the highest scores on the multiple choice test will be invited to the structured interview. The testing process is subject to change as needs dictate. Summary

Provides tutorial and technical assistance to welding students in a classroom, workshop, or walk-in setting and provides technical and clerical support to the welding program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Tutors students in small group and individual settings within a classroom and laboratory environment to reinforce concepts taught by the instructor and develop and increase skills in welding, including providing assistance to students in the use of equipment and materials needed for instruction, performing complex procedures for students, and orienting students to the laboratory or workshop.
  • Assists with presentation of lessons, learning materials, instructional exercises, and other classroom activities such as lab projects, small group exercises, and independent study; conducts demonstrations and simulations to support instruction.
  • Works with instructors to design, construct, modify, and rebuild equipment, modules, and experiments for use in the classrooms / laboratories.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and performs repairs on welding and related equipment.
  • Sets up, tests, and takes down equipment, supplies, and work stations used in classes and laboratories.
  • Cleans equipment and work areas; handles and disposes of harmful or hazardous materials according to specific instructions relating to their disposal.
  • Maintains and inventories equipment, materials, and supplies such as but not limited to tools, parts, metal items, consumable supplies, and written materials and manuals required for student instructional needs; checks out and monitors tools, equipment, supplies, and materials used by students.
  • Performs clerical duties in support of the welding program, including ensuring that students sign into the laboratory, preparing orientation and testing schedules, composing and preparing forms, documents, and materials, inputting data, maintaining files and records of classroom activity (e.g. answer keys, answer sheets, laboratory instructions, modules, charts, signs), recording attendance, and ordering materials and supplies.
  • Serves as a liaison between students and instructors and keeps instructors apprised of student progress.
  • May proctor tests in the absence of the instructor.

  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED AND six months of experience providing assistance to students in a welding instructional program or welding in an industrial / commercial environment
  • Completion of a recognized welding program of at least six months' duration

  • Completion of 48 semester units at an institution of higher education, or an associate's (or higher) degree highly desirable. Incumbents hired into this classification, and who have completed (and provided proof) of this level of education will be assigned as an Adult Education Instructional Assistant at salary range 60.
  • Licenses and Certificates

  • Welding certification granted by a recognized certifying agency such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Welding Society (AWS), Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS), or comparable agency is preferred
  • May require a valid California driver's license

    Requires the ability to :

  • Provide instructional support and tutoring to adult students of diverse backgrounds, abilities, and skill levels
  • Operate, diagnose, repair, and maintain welding equipment, tools, torches, and power saws
  • Construct welding equipment, work stations, and demonstrations used in instruction
  • Instruct students in the proper use of equipment
  • Read and understand operating manuals
  • Conduct welding demonstrations to students
  • Relate positively to students in a teaching / learning environment
  • Assist with supervising students
  • Proctor tests
  • Perform general clerical tasks
  • Operate office equipment, including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

  • Organize and prioritize work and manage time effectively
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and school information
  • Learn district and school regulations, policies, and objectives applicable to the welding program
  • Physical Abilities

    Requires :

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to manipulate (lift, carry, move) objects of medium weights on a regular basis
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, and crouch on a continuous basis
  • Sufficient hand-eye coordination and hand and finger dexterity to grasp small devices and specialized tools
  • Visual acuity to accurately operate and apply welding equipment, read small incremental instrumentation, and read technical and safety information
  • Sufficient auditory ability to observe work and moving objects
  • Working Conditions

    Work is performed indoors where safety considerations exist from physical labor and hazardous materials.

    Salary : Five step salary range that provides annual increases of approximately five percent until the fifth step is reached. New hire initial step placement (normally up to Step 3) based on qualifying education and experience as outlined in Merit System Rule 7.20.1. An employee who is promoted to a higher class shall be placed on the step of the new salary range that is at least five percent above the current rate, excluding any differential pay.

    Vacation : Earned based on assigned hours. Increased vacation allowance based on years of service with the district. Confidential employees receive an additional 3 days vacation allotment, up to a maximum of 22 days. Management employees receive 22 days of vacation (based on 12-month assignment).

    Sick Leave : Earned at the rate of one day (based on the number of assigned hours) per month, and is accumulative from year to year.

    Holidays : Fourteen paid holidays per year (based on 12-month assignment).

    Insurance and Credit Union : The District offers a competitive Health and Welfare plan for employees and dependents, based upon the number of hours worked; employees who are placed in a regular assignment of 20 hours or more per week are eligible for benefits. The Ventura Schools Federal Credit Union offers a variety of services.
