Position Summary:
The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs all necessary tests and procedures of the laboratory under the direction of the Laboratory Director
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis
- Assists ordering healthcare providers by accurately performing and reporting all in-house laboratory testing procedures and obtaining necessary specimens for reference laboratory testing, as required. In-house procedures include Hematology, Coagulation, Serology, Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis, Clinical Microscopy, Phlebotomy and Blood Bank.
- Performs complex analytical tests or procedures, recognizes deviation from expected results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision
- Recognizes factors that affect measurements and results, analyzes QC data, makes judgments concerning the results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision.
- Recognizes abnormal test results and answers inquiries about them, the methodology, specificity and sensitivity; answers questions about specific factors that can influence test results
- Analyzes blood cells by counting and identifying cells using microscopic techniques and procedures
- Prepares blood, plasma, and platelets for transfusions by conducting blood group type, and compatibility tests with corresponding quality control measures

- Calibration and Quality Control Procedures
- Completing preventive maintenance requirements
- Following manufacturer's instructions for all instruments
- Troubleshooting malfunctions, repairing if possible, and calls for repairs from manufacturer as needed
- Maintaining equipment inventories
- Evaluating new equipment and techniques
- Conserves laboratory resources by using only the equipment and supplies needed to accomplish quality results
- Provides medical technology information by answering questions and requests to patients, physicians, and ancillary departments
- Prepares reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information
- Maintains inter- and intradepartmental workflow by fostering a spirit of cooperation
- Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection control and hazardous waste policies and protocols
- Reports critical/panic results to attending physician and/or nurse
- Maintains quality assurance of the Laboratory by performing proficiency testing
- Performs clerical duties associated with supporting the laboratory
- Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Attend and participate in in-service education program, on-the-job training programs, etc. as directed or scheduled

Physical Requirements:
The Medical Laboratory Technologist must have the ability to move around freely, walk and stand for long periods of time; use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired; use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bend or twist their body; understand the speech of another person and speak clearly so listeners can understand; and see details of objects that are less than a few feet away and at a distance. A minimal amount of lifting is required.
