Our hospital is looking for a compassionate and quick thinking RN to join our Med / Surg team. The successful candidate will be responsible for handling initial patient assessments, performing laboratory work, point of care testing and associated administrative tasks. The Med-Surg / Geri-Psych nurse will also collaborate with doctors on discharge plans and create outpatient instructions for each patient that is not admitted to the hospital. The incumbent must be flexible to work multiple locations / units within the hospital and other shift times if deemed necessary by the Director of Nursing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Med-Surg and Geri-Psych Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of Nurses include (but are not limited to) :
Collects current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and then consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plansPerforms triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial elementsManages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and protocolInitiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring equipment shows adverse symptomatologyRecords patients' current vital signsWorks directly under physicians, assisting them during exams, diagnostic testing and treatmentsPrepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications.Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurseProvides IV therapyCleans and bandages woundsProvides basic, bedside careMaintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care for patientsReports any suspected abuse to the appropriate agenciesInitiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness / injury, by explaining : post-treatment home care needs, diet / nutrition / exercise programs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatmentDisplays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a timely mannerRecords all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate formsPerforms other duties as assignedSkills :

The RN must have the ability to move around freely, walk and stand for long periods of time; use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired; use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bend or twist their body; understand the speech of another person and speak clearly so listeners can understand; and see details of objects that are less than a few feet away and at a distance. The RN must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds on an as needed basis.
