Purpose of Role
To advise, coach, mentor and upskill site supervision and leadership to instill a culture of environmental stewardship that facilitates compliance with internal and external environmental regulations and leadership, at the local, state, province, and federal levels, ensuring conformance to company environmental standards. Facilitate and apply preferred environmental practices to protect Sims Limited’s ability to operate and enhance our environmental position in the communities in which we operate.
Principal Accountabilities:
- The majority of the time (80%) on average will be spent in either Richmond, CA, or Redwood City, CA. Occasional additional travel will also be required as needed to Rancho Cordova, CA, Sacramento, CA, San Jose, CA, Stockton, CA, Fernley, NV, and Sparks, NV.
- Drive implementation and application of environmental strategic initiatives. Implement, monitor, and adjust company-wide environmental key performance indicators and provide site-level management guidance and direction to meet improvement milestones to reach environmental strategic goals and objectives
- Oversee the implementation of site-level environmental operating procedures.
- Systematically monitor the management of environmental permits and compliance activities within the region (e.g. air quality, water quality, etc.) to ensure that all anticipated environmental-related activities are in compliance.
- Remain current on all training requirements (applicable Air Permits, RCRA, SPCC, SWPPP, etc.).
- Provide guidance for the creation of new or revised environmental permits.
- Provide guidance and support to the regional EHS team, to track, manage and report compliance activities and results to environmental company expectations.
- Support external/internal environmental audits of facilities and interface with key external audit entities on compliance activities; Supports Sims Internal Audit department to support environmental components for annual audit requirements.
- Systematically manage the data collection, operation, maintenance, and compliance of environmental systems.
- Support remediation projects and activities to ensure remediation efforts are managed with best practices to achieve optimum outcomes.
- Direct the development or revision of required compliance plans (Air, SPCC, SWPPP, etc.)
- Monitor the generation and completion of environmental reports as required.
- Oversee contractor management and vendors to conformance with environmental company standards, expectations, and local regulatory compliance.
- Development of systematic methods of management for environmental records, information, and reports required for regulatory compliance or per Company policy is maintained and completed as needed and on a timely basis, and that all records and information are properly safeguarded
- Support regional EHS with the investigation of significant environmental non-conformances or incidents, and the identification and communication of corrective actions.
- Support the upskilling, coaching/mentoring of operations management on environmental requirements. Develop training to direct Sims employees to follow environmental procedures and standard requirements.
- Oversee testing and monitoring of environmental emissions.
- Engage with stakeholders within the community to address proactive environmental initiatives and/or concerns raised with business activities.
- Affiliate with environmental associations to keep informed of environmental technologies and innovations for potential company applications.Liaise with governmental stakeholders to drive environmental activities within local regulations.
- Demonstrate personal responsibility for all Safety, Health, Environment, Community, and Sustainability (SHECS) policies, procedures, and initiatives
- Support diversity and inclusion, positive employee relations, and teamwork
- Support measures designed to effectively manage costs and adherence to budgetary requirements
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and quality requirements
- Comply with all Company policies, procedures, and initiatives relevant to the job
- Support training and performance-management initiatives
Required Experience:
- Degree in earth sciences (or below) or related field experience; ecology; energy; environmental engineering; environmental health; environmental sciences or management; engineering - with a sustainability focus.
- Min. of 5 years experience in environmental management, having site, regional and global experience for environmental compliance requirements, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience implementing workplace environmental regulations and standards and working with authorities involved in workplace EHS oversight
- May include technical and/or professional certifications
- Experience in metal or electronics recycling, or related industries, preferred
- Environmental 14001 ISO standard management experience preferred
- Advanced computer database and Microsoft Office software skills
- Strong understanding of regulations affecting manufacturing companies
- Strong customer-focused communications skills
