Position Announcement: Epidemiologist II Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) was founded in 2000 to generate creative approaches to improve the health of Chicago’s urban communities. Led by a team of dedicated social epidemiologists, community health workers, evaluators, and public health professionals, SUHI provides evidence-based examination of community health status, the effectiveness of public health interventions, and healthcare delivery methods.

We are seeking an Epidemiologist II.

Principal duties and responsibilities:

• Conducts analyses of epidemiological data.

• May oversee the work of and advise junior staff in data analysis, data reporting, and evaluation.

• Researches new methodological techniques.

• Understands and can use SAS, STATA, or similar data analysis software.

• Reviews epidemiological literature to obtain information on morbidity, mortality, and risk factors associated with diseases for inclusion in grants, reports, and publications.

• Under general direction, writes articles summarizing research findings for publication in professional journals and may mentor junior staff in writing such articles.

• Conveys results of epidemiologic and statistical analyses through written reports, publications, and presentations.

• Disseminates program and research findings to community and professional audiences.

• Participates in grant writing, including writing the research methods, providing epidemiologic information and data.

• Contributes substantially to the development and planning of new projects and programs.

• Reviews the literature regarding effective intervention approaches and adapts knowledge for target population(s).

• Designs and conducts surveys to collect new data to inform program development, policy, etc. • Develops and maintains epidemiological databases.

• Oversees the recruitment of program participants.

• Manages program budgets. Tracks expenses and reports them to the Director of SUHI and funder on a regular basis

• Obtains and/or assists with IRB approval and maintenance.

• Designs methods to measure the effectiveness of programs and projects. Makes recommendations based on findings.

• Conducts process and outcome evaluations, reporting regularly on findings.

• May oversee and advise on process and outcome evaluation activities.

• May act as a project lead (i.e. Project Manager, or Research Manager) for smaller scale initiatives without direct supervision and/or in the absence of a more senior project lead.

• Serves as an expert and liaison to groups formed for the study of epidemiology and disease prevention/management.

• Networks with other professionals at Sinai and at the local, state, and national level to move projects forward and potentially secure support and resources.

 

Required qualifications and skills include: Educational and workforce preparation, specifically

  • An MPH or MS with a concentration in epidemiology, biostatistics, or related field;
  • Three plus years of public health, project management, and other work experience that required proficiency in quantitative methods, research writing and dissemination; 
  • Demonstrated project management experience, including timeline, budget, and staff oversight.
  • Quantitative skills in epidemiology and statistics, including
  • Wide knowledge, and proficiency in application, of epidemiologic and statistical methods to assess health-related data; 
  • Knowledge of intervention research methods and program evaluation;
  •  Command of epidemiologic concepts needed to guide analyses and assist with developing studies;
  • Proficient use of statistical software such as Stata, SAS, and/or R; 
  • Proficiency in creating and maintaining epidemiologic database systems.
  • Scientific writing and research presentation, suitable to professional and community audiences
  • Writing articles and reports for professional journals;
  • Identifying funding opportunities and assist with grant writing;
  • Organizing and presenting study findings and epidemiologic information;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, translatable to multiple audiences and settings.
