Academic Advising at Sinclair is a collaborative effort between advisors and students. Advisors empower all students to define educational and career goals, listen to concerns, ask questions, and equip students to make informed choices to achieve their goals. This position supports the mission of the College by providing academic goal setting and advising services for students. Effective advising results in students completing milestones toward their individual academic, career, and personal goals which are consistent with the mission and goals of the College. Academic advisors and coaches may also be assigned administrative responsibilities under the leadership of a Senior Academic Advisor, Advising Manager, or Director that support the activities of the department.
The salary for this position begins at $57,344.00 and is determined commensurate with education and experience.
After in-person training, Advisors in good standing may have the opportunity to work up to 40% remotely.

Principal Accountabilities
- Provide holistic academic advising to assist students toward the completion of their education/career and personal goals
- Accurately interpret, apply, and clearly communicate the college’s academic requirements, processes and policies as well as stay up to date on curricular and policy changes
- Use the systems and processes provided by the institution to clearly and fully document interactions with students
- Complete case management activities to support student success in regard to retention and academic progression toward graduation
- Serve as an effective team member within the department, sub-groups, or any collaborative teams assigned
- Demonstrate performance that is innovative, well-organized, supportive of institutional goals and that fosters individual excellence and morale
- Actively participate in professional development and learning opportunities to enhance the student experience
- Academic Advisors and Coaches are assigned to serve a particular population of students. This population could be defined by student major or student type. Academic Coaches may be assigned to work with students who need additional support and to create training materials for other colleagues related to the training and support of these students
- Academic Advisors and Coaches support the mission of academic advising by providing training within the department and throughout the college
- Academic Advisors and Coaches are advocates for student success and may be called upon to develop or adapt student success practices that will support all Sinclair students, beyond those assigned to their caseload
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work or related field required; master’s degree in education, counseling, social work or related field preferred
- Minimum of 3 years’ professional work experience required; experience in higher education or student services preferred
- Ability to encourage students toward the identification and completion of their academic goals by suggesting activities and behavioral changes that student may, or may not be willing to adopt, required
- Ability to work occasional nights and weekends required
- Strong understanding of the College’s mission and policies and the ability to balance the needs of academically underprepared, underrepresented students, and the resources available required
- Ability to provide strong customer service orientation through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem solving, and desire to identify and support student success and completion required
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with FERPA guidelines required
- Must continually assimilate new information to provide accurate and timely information to students that will foster student success
- Must represent a positive example in the way they interact with their peers, supervisors, and with their students required. Advisors must exemplify work habits that Sinclair Community College would like students to emulate
