Sign Language Mentors (SLM) interact with students by helping them with their America Sign Language (ASL) course assignments and through conversations improve their second language acquisition. Exposure to native signers is crucial for students in the development of their ASL skills and cultural awareness. The interaction between students and the SLM teaches students about critical grammatical features of ASL, conversational turn-taking and many other important cultural nuances.

Principal Accountabilities
- Mentoring ASL students and assisting with course assignments
- Assist with administering of performance testing
- Provide students with models of ASL native signers in the lab
- Provide native language support in the classroom
- Supervise and schedule activities in the lab
- Participation in daily live and recorded role plays (PIEs – Practice Interpreting Experiences)
- Participate and guide tours for high school groups visiting the lab
- Design of bulletin boards on 1st and 2nd floor of bld. 9
- Monitor inventory of the EDU Lending Library
- Work with faculty to develop new materials for ASL and ECE students
- Host workshops for ASL students
- Provide activities and materials in the lab that are coordinated with the ASL curriculum and in cooperation with current topic taught in the classroom and/or current events, and holidays
Requirements
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree preferred
- Must be a native user of ASL or primary language is some mode of sign language (SEE, PSE, etc.) required
- Must have ability to quickly pick up the procedures for teaching and recording students required
