Description:
Substitute Instructional Assistant

Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned. Duties will be performed in the absence of the regular Instructional Assistant.

  • Reports to work as scheduled on a regular reliable basis
  • Ability to work with challenging students in a small group setting
  • Be able to tutor students (academically and socially)
  • Escort students to and from classrooms
  • Able to attend to personal hygiene of students
  • Good communication skills/Interpersonal skills
  • Responsible for documentation and record-keeping
  • Positive, caring, and patient
  • Enjoys working with students with behavior challenges
  • Knowledge and experience in behavior modification program preferred
  • Ability to redirect students towards positive behavior
  • If required able to communicate with the student's case manager, medical providers, and caregiver
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) paraprofessionals whose duties include instructional support, must meet one of the following:

  • Two years of study at an institution of higher education. The institution must have met five criteria of the Higher Education Act, Section 101(a). All classes must be at level 100 or higher
  • Associate degree or higher. All associate degrees are acceptable.
  • Obtain voluntary Paraeducator certification through the Board of Educational Examiners; or
  • Meet a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness). https://educateiowa.gov/sites/files/ed/documents/Para Requirements 2011.pdf

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to indoor and outdoor conditions, walk, stoop, bend, and sit.  The noise level in the work environment ranges from mild to loud.
