Job Summary: Provides key leadership and support to nurses, principals, and central office staff as it pertains to all facets of the area of nursing and actively coaches and supports nurses in the District. Responsible for advancing the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement and health of students. Facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety, including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.


Job Duties:

  • Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with teachers, principals, and directors regarding important issues relative to nursing.
  • Provides coaching and support to District nurses. May include modeling of nursing strategies. Develops and manages school nurse assignments at District sites.
  • Develops and manages clerical assistant assignments with school nurses.
  • Develops and manages school health services budget, including ordering and distribution of health supplies to District sites.
  • Participates in the recruiting and selection process of applicants for open nursing positions. Provide health care for chronic and acute illness, as well as injuries.
  • Assume responsibility for selection and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
  • Review medical orders to guide the health care needed to assist each student to be safe and successful at school.
  • Maintain accurate written and digital student health records including compliance with Iowa Immunization Requirements, School Dental Screening Requirements, and audits of these requirements. Develop, implement, and monitor students’ individual health plans (IHP). Performs and coordinates specialized health care procedures typical to students with chronic health conditions including delegation of nursing tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel. Advise on the exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infections and contagious diseases.
  • Dispense student medication per school policies. Assist with school registrations on health issues and immunization requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality in the school operation. Provide health-related education to students, school staff and to other school personnel to promote health, safety, and a healthy school environment.
  • Report to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies on school medical matters under the direction of the building.
  • Act as liaison to provide families with referral information along with available community resources to improve access to health care.
  • Serve as a member of the Building Emergency Response Team under the direction of the building principal.


Education and/or Experience: Minimum qualifications include a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from a National League of Nursing (NLN) accredited college or university and current registered nurse licensure from Board of Nursing to practice in the state of Iowa. Must possess current Health Care Provider Life Page 2 of 2 Support CPR/AED certification from the American Heart Association. Knowledge of professional standards such as Nurse Practice Act and other statutes. Current statement or credentials to obtain a School Nurse Statement of Professional Recognition from the Board of Educational Examiners. National Certified School Nurse (NCSN) is preferred. Previous pediatric nursing, school health nursing, or community health nursing experience highly desirable. Valid driver’s license to operate personal insured motor vehicle between locations. Experience as a Sioux City Community School District School Nurse.

6. Demonstrates competence in classroom and resource management.

7. Engages in professional growth. 8. Fulfills professional responsibilities established by the school district.
