Position Description
JOB TITLE : SCHOOL COUNSELOR / GRADUATION COACH
REPORTS TO : Building Principal
SUPERVISES : Students assigned to counseling program, students assigned to classroom instruction, students on 504 caseload
WORKS WITH : Teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, teachers, classified staff, parents, community members, community organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS : Master's degree in professional school counseling or an equivalent degree. Current, valid South Dakota teaching school counseling licensure prior to employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Hand-eye, mind-eye coordination. Constant hearing; intermittent speaking, standing, walking, and writing. Frequent carrying, keyboarding, and other repetitive motions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS : Excellent oral and written communication skills. Skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Knowledgeable of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students. Demonstrated skills in the use of technology to enhance student learning.
EXPERIENCE : Successful counseling internship
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
- Provide individual student academic planning and goal setting
- Provide school counseling classroom lessons based on student success standards
- Provide short-term counseling to students
- Provide referrals for long-term support
- Collaborate with families / teachers / administrators / community for student success
- Advocate for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings
- Analyze data to identify student issues, needs, and challenges
- Counsel groups and individual students through the development of educational and career plans.
- Develop and monitor student 504 plans
- Serve as building assessment coordinator
- Participate in Professional Growth Opportunities and Demonstrate Professionalism
Participate in ongoing professional growth
