Description

Serves as Managing Editor of the Journal and is responsible for the smooth and seamless operation of the journal from management of new manuscript submissions to preparation of accepted articles for publication, including English language editing and evaluating manuscript proofs. Management duties center on overseeing the timely and accurate processing of manuscripts from submission to publication, in coordination with the Editor in Chief, Associate Editor, Deputy Editors, Special Editors, staff reviewers, external reviewers, editorial interns, and publisher staff via publisher-managed electronic information management systems, email, synchronous online meetings, and telephone.

Examples of Duties

Editorial Writing

  • Edit accepted research manuscripts, editorials, and other materials for clarity and concision, with attention to the Journal’s equity mission as well as the publisher’s style guide and requirements.
  • Proof accepted manuscripts’ figures, tables, and supplementary files for content, style, format, clarity, etc.
  • Interpret and edit, in written form, accepted manuscripts submitted by international contributors in English language acceptable for publication.
  • Collaborate, as desired, with the Editor in Chief and other board members on scholarly research on academic publishing.


Editorial Assistance

  • Review all incoming e-mail and telephone calls pertaining to the journal, responding directly or providing the relevant documentation for the Editor in Chief’s personal response. Such communication requires a professional manner, the ability to relay information exactly as supplied, to formulate messages from general information, and to problem–solve as needed. Correspondence with the Editor in Chief comes from the publisher’s editorial and information technology staff, the Associate Editor, Deputy Editors, special editors, staff reviewers, external reviewers, editorial interns, authors, and other members of the scholarly community.
  • Independently oversee the processing of electronic manuscripts. Keep track of Editor’s, Deputy Editors’, and peer reviewers’ evaluation of manuscripts and ensure prompt and accurate management of submissions and feedback to all parties.
  • Analyze electronic filing needs in relation to the Journal and establish procedures for same.
  • Assist with preparing a weekly agenda along with supporting documents to organize Editor in Chief’s and Associate Editor’s management of the manuscripts.
  • Invite scholars recommended by the Editor in Chief and Deputy Editors to conduct peer reviews. Follow up with reviewers who are late and recruit additional reviewers as needed. Communicate with the Editor in Chief about concerning reviews to ensure a humane peer review process for all stakeholders.
  • Deal independently with authors’, reviewers’, or publisher staffs’ e-mail and phone calls regarding manuscripts.
  • Format and forward accepted manuscripts for submission to publisher, including keywords and the editor’s changes to manuscripts. Check formatting, references, and tables for conformity with publisher’s guidelines.
  • Correspond with authors via email to inform them of the status of their manuscripts; keep all authors informed as to the status of their manuscript after it has reached the publisher and until online publication.
  • Proofread and correct accepted article proofs from the publisher.


Editorial Management

  • Interact with authors, reviewers, the Editor in Chief, Associate Editor, Deputy Editors, Special Editors, Staff Reviewers, Editorial Interns, the Publisher, and others in writing regarding substantive issues concerning manuscripts and materials for publication. Substantive issues may include concerns about review quality or timeliness, suspected plagiarism, human subjects protection, protection of confidential information, inappropriate AI use, and other sensitive topics. This interaction must be prompt, professional, and constructive in tone and often requires problem-solving to handle constructively.
  • Use the publisher’s online information management system to move manuscripts through a prompt, user-friendly editorial process that includes the Editor in Chief, Associate Editor, Deputy Editors, staff reviewers, editorial interns, external reviewers, and others and includes the dissemination of materials accepted for publication to the publisher’s production team.
  • Assist with arranging Journal board meetings, which includes generating Doodle polls and notifying the Editor in Chief of the optimal time and date for the meeting.
  • Track and ensure the accuracy of Journal board member profiles in the publisher’s online information management system.

Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, public relations, journalism, English, or a closely related field
  • Two (2) years (24 months) of experience writing for a newspaper, magazine, trade publication, news organization or writing in a public relations, research, or business communications environment
