Job Title: Associate Camp Director
Classification: Full-time/Year-round, Exempt

SJ Riding Camp is searching for an Associate Director to join our year-round camp team. We are looking for an experienced camp professional who excels in creating relationships and leading others. This is a hybrid role, located in Ellington, CT.

Position Purpose and Scope
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director manages the day-to-day functioning of both the summer camp and year round programming at SJ Riding Camp. They are responsible for camper enrollment and marketing, staff recruitment and supervision, and program development and management. They will also assist the Executive Director in the financial stewardship and strategic development of the camp.

Essential Job Functions
Camp & Program Management

● Manage the day to day operations of the summer camp while in session including scheduling, programming, and camper and staff management

● Develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum for all non-riding programming

● Assist the Executive Director in implementing budgets and managing financials
● Supervise year round staff in the management and development of the facilities and off-season programming

Hiring & Staff Management
● Implement recruitment & retention strategies to hire new & returning staff, international staff, and year round staff
● Develop and implement a strong counselor-in-training program
● Supervise seasonal and year-round staff, develop a quality staff training program, and provide guidance and support to encourage staff well-being

Enrollment & Marketing
● Manage camper enrollment including recruitment, retention, and marketing strategies
● Maintain camper records and communication

Relationship Management
● Develop positive relationships with campers, families, staff, and other industry professionals
● Seek input from the camp community to assist in improving the quality, safety, and enjoyment for all community members
● Participate in community activities and attend conferences/educational programs

Prerequisites

● Must pass background and criminal record checks
● Valid driver’s license with a history of safe driving
● CPR/First Aid Certification
● Ability to travel as needed
● Computer & data management skills (gsuite) and experience with camp management software (Campminder preferred)

Qualifications:
● Minimum of 3 years in camp leadership: director/associate/assistant director or equivalent including program management experience
● College degree in early childhood education, child development, physiology or social work is preferred
● Strong attention to detail and timeliness
● Can demonstrate historical success in running summer camps and fostering the social-emotional development of both children and young staff
● Above average ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
● Ability to direct and supervise others effectively
● Experience creating and monitoring budgets and financial accounts
● Experience with horses is a bonus, a genuine interest in learning about horses is required (no riding required).

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

This position requires the ability to listen to others, observe others’ actions, read text and information, comprehend instructions and manuals, and physical ability to move about the camp property in various environmental conditions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

The Associate Director is required to live on camp property full-time June through August and part-time April, May, and September. Off-season work can be done remotely with the occasional on-site visits as needed. Year round housing is available if desired.
