Parks/Fair Aide (Seasonal)

SUMMARY:

Assists County staff with maintaining Skagit County Parks and Fairgrounds in safe, attractive, and usable condition. Assists with maintenance and construction tasks necessary for the upkeep and repair of facilities, grounds, and equipment. Assists other County departments in providing services and other duties as assigned. One year of experience with desired equipment and tools is preferred.

-Salary upon hire is $18.38/hr.
-The Parks/Fair Aide (Seasonal) is Range 6 Step 1 of the General Salary Schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assists County staff with maintaining Parks and Fairgrounds, including mowing, weed eating, pruning, removing garbage and litter, raking, aerating and fertilizing. Weekend and evening shifts shall periodically be required. Helps perform safety checks on facilities.

Prepares facilities for rentals, 4-H group use, special events, and Skagit County Fair.

Assists County Leads, Fair Maintenance Manager and Fair Maintenance Worker with renovating turf, landscaping, fields, lawns, flowerbeds, trails, playgrounds, picnic and other areas.

Assist with repairs at the Parks/Fairground, such as steps, buildings, decks, shelters, barbecues, picnic, and campsites, restrooms, and other Parks/Fairground facilities.

Operates and assists with maintaining equipment as needed. Ability and experience to drive an articulated lawn mower.

Assists with safety checks and reports to County Parks/Fairground Lead on items needing repair or replacement.

Assists with maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment.

Works with the public, answering questions, providing information, and controlling facility use.

Works independently on weekends and late hours. Responds to campground needs. Helps to keep peace at the parks/campgrounds and coordinates emergency response with law enforcement as needed.

Attends staff meetings, as necessary.

May be required to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.

SUPERVISORY:
None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical path to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• A minimum of three years of related experience is required.
• High School diploma or GED.

REQUIRES KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Methods and procedures used in parks and grounds maintenance.

REQUIRES THE ABILITY TO:

• Work with people in a courteous manner
• Communicate clearly and maintain effective public relations.
• Work cooperatively with staff, volunteers, contracted personnel, and the public.
• Operation of hand and small power tools, including weed eater.

LICENSES and/or CERTIFICATIONS:
Valid Washington State driver’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions. Requires ability to maneuver through wooded areas, hiking uphill for long distances, to lift heavy objects, pull, push, bend, walk, climb, crawl, and/or stand for extended periods of time. Heavy lifting (in excess of 50 pounds) occasionally required.

Requires good motor coordination, manual and finger dexterity.

Must be able to work under stress.

HAZARDS:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions. Employee occasionally works alone. Occasional exposure to pesticides or cleaning chemicals.
