NOTE: Valid 100-Ton Master License requiredShall be required to work a rotating schedule consisting of days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shall be guaranteed a schedule of an average of 90 hours per month (average based upon a one-year period). Shall be scheduled for up to the first 182 per month, if available. Performs duties of Master, Purser and Deckhand for the County Ferry that transports passengers, vehicles, goods and services to and from Guemes Island.- Salary upon hire is step 1 through 3 ($31.18 to $33.42 per hour) for a Regular part-time Purser/Deckhand, dependent upon qualifications.- Salary upon hire is step 1 through 3 ($35.78 to $38.34 per hour) for a Regular part-time Master, dependent upon qualifications. - Progressive increases are based upon years of service with Skagit County, up to step 8 total steps (Purser/Deckhand top step $39.67 per hour) (Master top step $4.53 per hour) . Regular Full-time Purser/Deckhand II is range 4 of salary schedule IBU - Inlandboatmen's Union and when operating as a Master is range 6 of the salary schedule IBU - Inlandboatmen's Union.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Master: Serve as shift supervisor, responsible for all activities during the assigned shift. Operate the ferry in accordance with the published sailing schedule between Anacortes and Guemes Island. Supervise all vessel activity in accordance with the certificate of inspection, stability letter, Coast Guard rules and regulations and Skagit County policy and procedure manual. Operate the vessel, adjusting course for current, wind, fog, and other vessels. Minimum 2 years, Z dive experience preferred.Check oil and coolant levels in main engines and generator. Check oil levels in clutches and outdrives. Assist mechanic in diagnosing mechanical and electrical systems.Deckhand: Open and close gates, secure vessel at loading dock, raise and lower bridges and ramps, control and direct vehicles and passengers on and off the ferry. Minimum 2 years experience on vessels of similar tonnage preferred. Purser: Sell tickets and collect fare for passage of passengers and vehicles using the Ferry. Daily reconciliation of tickets sold and cash received. Make daily deposits; keep coast guard counts of vehicles and passengers. Supervisory: This position has supervisory responsibilities when functioning as a Master. OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS: General maintenance on the vessel and at the terminals. This includes emptying trash receptacles, cleaning bathroom facilities, cleaning parking areas.Answers phone in office and provide information in a courteous and helpful manner to the public about Ferry service.May be tasked with performing related duties. Related duties as required are duties that may not be specifically listed in the position description, but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's classification of work.
