Job Summary
We are seeking an energetic and detail-oriented Paralegal to join our immigration team. The Paralegal will play a critical role in supporting the organization’s immigration projects, focusing on assisting low-income asylum seekers in the Skagit Valley. The position involves conducting client intakes, preparing immigration forms, managing case files, and supporting workshops that help asylum seekers apply for asylum and employment authorization.
Responsibilities
- Assist clients with the preparation and submission of asylum and employment authorization applications.
- Conduct client intakes, legal screenings, and interviews to collect necessary information and documents.
- Provide support for asylum and employment authorization workshops, ensuring timely application filing for clients within the 1-year asylum deadline.
- Prepare, organize, and maintain client files, ensuring compliance with confidentiality and case management standards.
- Draft correspondence, affidavits, and other documents under attorney supervision.
- Monitor and track deadlines for filings, follow-ups, and client communications.
- Collaborate with attorneys, pro bono volunteers, and legal interns to provide high-quality legal assistance.
- Provide clients with legal education and orientation regarding immigration processes, particularly asylum and employment authorization.
- Participate in outreach events and legal clinics to engage with agricultural workers and immigrant communities.
- Use SLA’s case management and timekeeping systems to document and report on work performed.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree, Paralegal Certificate, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Prior experience in immigration law or working with immigrant communities is highly preferred.
- Fluency in Spanish is required..
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Workspace and ability to learn case management software.
- Experience working with low-income communities, communities of color, or limited English speakers is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
