Job Description
SUMMARY: The Registered Professional Nurse independently plans and provides professional nursing care to patients in accordance with physician orders and established guidelines, and in accordance with the scope of practice as defined by the Georgia Nurse Practice Act.
The Hospital Staff RN III manages care of an assigned group of patients in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the Hospital. The practice of all professional nurses at the Hospital reflects the values of collaboration, communication, coordination, The Hospital Staff Registered Nurse positions are based on a sequential progression from a novice nurse to an expert. The job descriptions for Staff RN I to Staff RN VI therefore imply that a nurse who is employed at a specific level possesses the knowledge, skills, competencies and critical thinking abilities of all prior levels. As an example, the job description for Staff RN III includes all provisions of Staff RN I and II in addition to the specific requirements of the Staff RN III position.
STAFF RN III: The Staff RN III position is part of the NSH Nursing Excellence Track (NEXT) program. Staff RN IIIs are competent nurses and practice professional nursing in various clinical areas and settings
PRIMARY NURSING DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Staff RN III
1. Demonstrates competency in clinical practice; self-directed in goal setting in management of complex patients and families; utilizes the nursing process and is skilled at adapting care to rapidly changing patient conditions.
2. Provides safe, competent patient care; is knowledgeable of current patient care guidelines; communicates with peers, colleagues, providers and others.
3. Independently implements the nursing process for patients and families; integrates unit- and service-wide evidence-based practice resources into clinical practice.
4. Self-sufficient, competent and safe in the operation of unit-based patient care technology; efficiently operates the organization’s computerized information systems; continuously develops personal practice competencies, skills and knowledge.
5. Delegates care where appropriate.
6. Serves as a preceptor for new employees and students.
7. Creates personal goals for lifelong learning and professional growth.
8. Conducts self-assessment of performance and identifies own learning needs
9. Identifies ethical issues in practice and takes appropriate action.
10. Refers to, consults with, and makes provision for continuity of care with other health care providers.
11. Uses evidence-based guidelines and policies to guide professional practice.
12. Participates in established quality improvement studies and/or activities for patient safety and quality measures; assists in continual readiness activities.
UNIT/ROLE SPECIFIC PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Operating Room 1. Prior Operating Room experience or completion of a course in Operating Room nursing preferred.
1. Certified in ACLS, preferred
2. Applies the nursing process to assess and care for the adult, adolescent, geriatric, and pediatric patient throughout their perioperative experience.
3. Maintains competency in the care of the patient in the perioperative setting, specific to the area of practice and including use of required equipment.
4. Demonstrates proficiency in required duties and techniques, and processes inherent in performing these duties and techniques that are specific to the area of practice in the perioperative setting.
5. Adheres to professional requirements and recommended standards of practice of professional organizations as applicable to role in the perioperative setting (i.e., AORN Standards and Recommended Practices, Standards of Perianesthesia Nursing Practice.)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:
1. Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed as a RN in the State of Georgia in good standing without limitations.
2. Minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience as a RN post-orientation or post- residency training.
3. Certified in American Heart Association’s Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).

WORKING CONDITIONS
Possible exposure to infectious/contagious diseases, hazardous chemicals and materials, needle sticks, blood and body fluids. All employees are offered the opportunity to receive the Hepatitis B vaccination series. May be exposed to radiation and may be asked to handle radioactive materials.
