Job Overview: A Sheet Metal Fabricator for HVAC is responsible for creating and assembling custom sheet metal components used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This includes ducts, vents, enclosures, and other metal parts required for the installation or repair of HVAC systems. The role requires a solid understanding of HVAC design, metalworking skills, and the ability to read blueprints to fabricate metal parts to precise specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fabrication of HVAC Components: Fabricate sheet metal products such as ductwork, air handlers, vents, and diffusers according to job specifications, blueprints, and building codes.
- Ductwork Fabrication & Installation: Measure, cut, bend, and assemble metal sheets into custom ductwork systems for residential, commercial, and industrial HVAC projects. Ensure proper fittings, seals, and dimensions.
- Blueprint Reading: Interpret HVAC blueprints, mechanical drawings, and schematics to understand the required specifications for metal parts.
- Cutting & Shaping Metal: Use various tools and equipment, including shears, press brakes, and lasers, to cut, shape, and form metal sheets to meet project requirements.
- Welding & Soldering: Perform welding, soldering, and brazing techniques on metal joints to ensure secure and durable connections.
- Quality Control: Inspect the fabricated components to ensure they meet safety, quality, and engineering standards. Conduct tests to verify proper fitting and airflow in duct systems.
- Assembly of HVAC Systems: Assemble the fabricated sheet metal pieces into functional HVAC components, ensuring proper connections and support for system efficiency.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety guidelines, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), handling tools safely, and maintaining a clean work environment.
- Collaboration: Work closely with HVAC technicians, installers, and project managers to ensure that fabricated components meet the required specifications and are delivered on time for installation.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (additional technical education or training in HVAC or sheet metal work is a plus).
- Proven experience in sheet metal fabrication, specifically for HVAC systems.
- Proficiency in using metalworking tools, including shears, brakes, and welders.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, including airflow, duct sizing, and venting principles.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
- Experience with welding, soldering, and brazing techniques.
- Attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of safety regulations and commitment to workplace safety.
Working Conditions:
- Work may be performed in a workshop, but can also include on-site fabrication and installation of HVAC systems in buildings.
- Must be able to lift and handle heavy materials and work in various environmental conditions.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and fumes from welding may require the use of PPE such as gloves, goggles, and respirators.
