The ACCS Innovation Center, a division of the Alabama Community College System, brings together the state’s community colleges, business and industry, and community partners to deliver rapid, industry-recognized non-credit training within some of the state’s most in-demand career fields. The Innovation Center is committed to building a skilled workforce in Alabama through accessible, industry-recognized programs that prepare individuals for successful careers through a training called Skills for Success.
Skills for Success training is offered at no cost, thanks to legislative appropriations that allow for the development and deployment of training statewide. A unique feature of Skills for Success training is how quickly it can be completed. Part of the training is offered online, with self-paced interactive learning. Upon completing the online portion of the course, students then complete hands-on training with qualified instructors at any of the 24 community colleges around the state. The in-person labs simulate real work experience and test students for mastery of skills.
Participants who complete training also earn a certificate of completion from the local Community College, which signals to businesses that the individual has mastered the skills taught in the program and is immediately ready for employment.
Role Description:
We are currently seeking skilled, passionate, and experienced tradespeople across the state of Alabama to join our team as Construction Trade Instructors on a contract basis to help train individuals.
As an instructor, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the skilled trades workforce, providing students with the knowledge and hands-on expereince needed to thrive in their careers.
Ideal candidates will have expertise in electrical and/or carpentry, along with experience in teaching and conducting practical training sessions while assessing student performance. Instructors will collaborate directly with Workforce Development offices at Alabama's Community Colleges to deliver training to students interested in starting careers as Electrical or Carpentry Helpers. Based on their travel radious, they will be connected to the appropiate colleege for instructor opportunities.
Instructors will be called upon as needed, with expectations to work 16-20 hours per scheduled training. This typically involves 2-3 full days (8 hours each), where you will oversee and guide students through hands-on instruction after they have completed interactive training modules.
Job Overview:
As a Construction Trade Instructor for Electrical and Carpentry, you will be responsible for delievering both classroom instruction and hands-on training in your area of expertise. This contract role offers flexibility, allowing you to contribute to the development of students while sharing your practical industry experience. You will ensure that students gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in their respective trades, with a strong emphasis on safety, professionalism, and practical application of trade skills.
Qualifications:
Electrical Trade Instructor:
- Teach Electrical Fundamentals: Provide students with a strong understanding of electrical theory, terminology, and basic circuit principles.
- Hands-On Training: Lead practical training sessions in the safe and effective use of electrical tools, wiring, conduit bending, and basic electrical systems.
- Safety Protocols: Educate students on safety standards, proper use of PPE, and electrical hazard mitigation, ensuring a safe learning environment.
- Industry Practices: Equip students with the skills to assist electricians, including proper tool handling, job site organization, and system troubleshooting.
- Course Outcomes: Prepare students for entry-level electrical helper roles and provide foundational knowledge for future career growth in the electrical trade.
Carpentry Trade Instructor:
- Teach Carpentry Fundamentals: Introduce students to the commercial construction industry, focusing on carpentry helper roles and basic carpentry techniques.
- Hands-On Training: Instruct students on the use of carpentry tools, materials, and techniques, covering both rough and finish carpentry.
- Safety Protocols: Educate students on OSHA regulations, PPE, and emergency procedures to mitigate common construction site hazards.
- Material Handling: Teach students proper techniques for the handling, storage, and transportation of construction materials.
- Teamwork & Communication: Emphasize effective communication strategies and teamwork on construction sites to ensure project success.
- Course Outcomes: Prepare students to assist skilled carpenters effectively and understand the basics of commercial construction.
Additional Qualifications:
- Experience: Experience in the electrical or carpentry trades, with a strong understanding of industry practices, tools, and safety protocols.
- Certifications: Relevant trade certifications or licenses (e.g., Electrical Helper, Journeyman Electrician, Carpenter, OSHA certifications) are preferred.
- Teaching Experience: Previous teaching or mentoring experience is a plus but not required.
- Skills: Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage and teach diverse groups of students with different levels of experience (none to expertise)
- Passion for Education: A strong desire to share your expertise and mentor the next generation of tradespeople.
