This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Chief Engineer or Assistant Director ready to take the next step into a Director-level role at a dynamic, design-forward hotel.
Position Overview:
The Director of Engineering will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the hotel's physical infrastructure, including building maintenance, safety systems, mechanical equipment, and capital improvements. This is a highly hands-on leadership position, requiring someone who is not only technically skilled across all engineering trades—mechanical, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing—but also confident working in a unionized environment. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced setting, collaborates well across departments, and has a guest-first mindset.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead daily engineering operations with a focus on guest satisfaction, safety, and operational efficiency
- Supervise, train, and support union engineering staff while maintaining positive labor relations
- Oversee preventive maintenance schedules, capital project planning, and emergency repairs
- Ensure all building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, elevators) function optimally
- Partner with housekeeping, front office, and F&B to address operational and service needs quickly
- Manage compliance with all city, state, and federal regulations (e.g., DOB, FDNY, OSHA)
- Maintain vendor relationships and oversee work performed by outside contractors
- Monitor department budget, control costs, and contribute to sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive engineering experience in hotels; union experience strongly preferred
- Strong working knowledge of hotel systems and trades (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC)
- Previous experience in a lifestyle or boutique hotel environment is a plus
- Ability to lead a team while being actively involved in daily technical operations
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- NYC license or certificates of fitness (or ability to obtain them) preferred
