Job Title: MS/HS Coaches
SUMMARY
Some of the responsibilities of the MS/HS coach include knowing the mission of the school and the athletic department and understanding the role of athletics at SkyView Academy. Each head coach should have the ability to articulate his or her own personal coaching philosophy as it evolves. This quality can be crucial when parents, players, other coaches and fans scrutinize your words and actions. It is imperative that the head coach articulate their philosophy to the developmental coaches so that elements of the head coaches’ philosophy can be taught at varying levels of middle school and junior varsity teams. Head coaches must have knowledge related to fitness and conditioning, general health habits and expertise in their sports area. They must exhibit proper leadership and conduct, be fair and consistent disciplinarians, show respect to opponents and officials, and coach every player on the team. The MS/HS Coach must be a strong, positive, respectful role model for his/her athletes and be a consistent ambassador of the game and of SkyView Academy Charter School. All school coaches are expected to take the CHSAA coaches test each year. Additionally, all coaches must keep current with CPR, First Aid, Concussion, and Mental Health certification.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-Season Responsibilities
- Generate an email list to contact athletes.
- Announce time and date for the Parent Orientation meeting through email sent to the team.
- During the Parent Orientation meeting: communicate the dates for the season schedule, including the practice schedule, review the parent/player handbook and solicit a parent(s) who will be a team parent.
- Inform players of team rules and regulations and set up a system to hold players accountable to those expectations.
- Ensure that each athlete has his/her completed Athletic Packet with required signed forms, physical exam documentation and fees turned into the Athletic Director before the practice season starts and prior to any athletic practicing.
- Work with the Athletic Director in completing the season schedule.
- Ability to effectively motivate, coach, and lead teams of students.
- Able to communicate and interact positively and effectively with students, parents, teachers, and school administrators.
- Able to build and foster team relationships and camaraderie.
- Strong self-starter; able to work with limited direction.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, conflict management skills, problem solving skills and demonstrated leadership abilities.
Mid-Season Responsibilities:
- Ensure that practices are being supervised in a safe and proper manner.
- Learn and apply safety protocols for school as well as train assistant coaches in safety protocols.
- Notify the athletic department of any unsafe equipment or facilities.
- Bring emergency cards, first aid kit, water bottles and warm-up equipment to all away matches. Be aware of health concerns for athletes.
- Communicate all injuries to the Athletic Director by submitting an accident report.
- Monitor athletes eligibility each week
Post Season Responsibilities:
- Attend the end of season Awards Ceremony and speak briefly about each player on the team before presenting the awards for your sport.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Distribute, track and collect uniforms.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- This position will supervise players and team managers.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
The Head Coach reports directly to the Athletic Director.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- College degree required.
- Knowledge related to fitness and conditioning, general health habits and expertise in the particular sport area.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to competently assess individual and team goals and plan and organize accordingly.
- Ability to effectively motivate, coach, and lead teams of students.
- Able to communicate and interact positively and effectively with students, parents, teachers, and school administrators.
- Able to build and foster team relationships and camaraderie.
- Strong self-starter; able to work with limited direction.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, conflict management skills, problem solving skills and demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
- Resourceful in generating creative solutions to problems.
- Ability to apply superb judgment.
