What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Site Reliability Engineer position at Skyward?
We are Skyward.
That is, a love for people, for improvement, for human advancement through information technology. We are a people-centered business with a desire to serve others. We are diverse and unified; creative and collaborative; a collection of complementary, not competing talents. And though on the surface we remain relaxed, beneath, a torrent of energy links us to our civic tech mission.
We stand by our values, and we won’t compromise on any of them.
Integrity: We’re conscientious, intentional, and empathetic. Our words and actions align. That’s our character. Please don’t ask us to play another part, we’re poor actors.
Compassionate: If we may borrow a quote from Theodore Roosevelt: “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” Because our team is thoughtful and supportive, caring deeply for each other, our clients, and our work, this comes naturally.
Inquisitive: We remain students by failing openly and turning lessons into solutions.
Unconventional: For us, life isn’t what happens outside of work. Work happens inside of life and our culture erases the line often dividing the two.
Authentic: Made possible only because we embody the values listed above. We’re relaxed and fun yet intensely curious and driven. Team members are placed with thought, care, and precision to ensure that Trust, Truth, and Transparency continue to represent our brand.
Because of that, we continue Onward, Upward, and Skyward.
We need an Infrastructure and Reliability Lead.
Do you see the big picture when it comes to how IT services operate across complex production environments—and love diving into the details to make them run faster, smarter, and more reliably? Are you the go-to expert for automating infrastructure, championing cloud-native practices, and building resilient systems that scale? If you're passionate about bridging site reliability engineering, cloud architecture, and infrastructure strategy—and you're ready to lead the charge—then we want to hear from you.
Come join us if you're motivated to learn from others, to learn from mistakes, to be part of a future-looking and growth-oriented team.
Let's go Skyward together.
What you’ll do:
- Be part of a cross-functional team that is modernizing an enterprise-wide platform at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
- Build scalable, resilient, and secure infrastructure that leverages cloud-native technologies and supports the deployment of advanced AI capabilities.
- Champion SRE practices – automating operations, reducing toil, and building observability into every layer of the platform.
- Develop infrastructure-as-code pipelines and CI/CD workflows for multi-environment deployments.
- Partner with engineers to deploy AI/ML models at scale, ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance.
- Work closely with the team to integrate security and compliance (e.g. FedRAMP, NIST 800-53) into infrastructure pipelines.
- Lead all infrastructure initiatives and mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, ownership, and continuous improvement.
What we’d like you to have:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in infrastructure, cloud, or SRE roles, with 2 years in a technical leadership or lead engineer capacity.
- Deep AWS experience (IAM, EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, etc), familiarity with multi-account architecture and networking.
- Proficiency with Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation. Experience automating across DevSecOps pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with Node.js and Typescript for building and maintaining scalable backend services and infrastructure tools.
- Understanding of infrastructure needs for deploying ML models (e.g., containerization, GPU/CPU scaling, data pipelines).
- Comfortable working in regulated environments and integrating security/compliance into platform design.
- Curious, collaborative, and mission driven. You’re someone who sees infrastructure as a product and believes in continuous improvement.
What would blow us away:
- You have experience supporting CMS, HHS, or other federal healthcare agencies.
- You are a certified AWS Solutions Architect of DevOps Engineer.
Even if you don’t meet 100% of the qualifications, we encourage you to apply. At Skyward, we’re focused on hiring individuals with the right skills and passion to grow, not just checking off every box.
