Position Overview

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated scientist to contribute to the production and characterization of photocathodes, materials that generate electron beams used in accelerator facilities such as the LCLS-II. This associate scientist position provides an opportunity to work at the forefront of accelerator science, studying photocathode materials like tri-alkali pnictides (e.g. K2CsSb), bi-alkali chalcogenides (e.g. Cs2Te), and mono-alkali halides (e.g. CsBr), with the potential to explore emerging materials.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include

  • The associate scientist will produce and characterize photocathodes using deposition and diagnostic systems, analyze experimental data, and compare results to theoretical predictions.
  • The role also involves maintaining a safe lab environment by following safety protocols and best practices.
  • The associate scientist will share findings through peer-reviewed publications, oral presentations, and conference participation, and will contribute by developing original research proposals.

Note: This position is at the Associate Scientist (Tier 2) level. The Associate Scientist is a 3 to 5 year fixed term research staff position. The Associate position is assessed after the 3 to 5 year period with the possibility of appointment to the Staff Scientist level. Appointment to the Associate Scientist level requires a review and evaluation of documented scientific achievement.

To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring

  • Ph.D. in physics or materials science, with a background in vacuum science or electron emission (e.g. thermal, field, or photoemission).
  • Familiarity with materials science techniques, proficiency in LabVIEW
  • Knowledge of photocathode deposition processes such as thermal evaporation are highly desirable.
  • Candidates should be able to collaborate effectively in a team, communicate clearly, and adapt to changing project needs, including working off-hours and traveling as required.
  • Effective communication and writing skills for preparing and presenting technical and scientific documentation
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population

The expected pay range for this position is $118,000 to $175,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
