What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Scientist - Material Science, LCLS position at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory?
SLAC Job Postings
Position Overview :
We seek an Associate Staff Scientist to join the Material Science Department within Linac Coherent Light Source's (LCLS) Science, Research, and Development division, a SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory science directorate. The successful candidate will assist in installing and commissioning the upgraded X-ray Pump-Probe (XPP) instrument at the LCLS and help develop new scientific opportunities, exploiting large average coherent flux. The candidate will also support research activities and user experiments at XPP, the X-ray Coherent Scattering (XCS), and other instruments.
LCLS is undergoing a major upgrade (LCLS-II-HE), enabling repetition rates (up to 1MHz) that would increase average coherent flux by over 1000x, significantly surpassing any other X-ray source. The upgrade will allow paradigm shifting advances in time-resolved coherent imaging, multi-dimensional spectroscopy, and investigation of Femto-to-nanosecond fluctuations, while also maintaining leadership in well-established LCLS capability of ultrafast dynamics across space, time, and energy through the optical pump-¿X-ray probe measurements.
An initial opportunity for a successful candidate will be the development of X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) diagnostics and X-ray optics for high repetition rate operation and methodologies to further insights into structural dynamics in materials and devices. The candidate is also expected to develop original portfolio of research utilizing the LCLS-II-HE capabilities.
Note : This position is posted at the Associate Staff Scientist level. The Associate Scientist position is a 3-to-5-year fixed term position and the entry level in the Staff Scientist career path. The Associate Scientist position is scheduled to be assessed after the 3 to 5-year period with the possibility of appointment to the Staff Scientist level.
Applicants should include a cover letter, a statement of research including a summary of accomplishments, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and names of five references for future letters of recommendation with the application. Review of applications will begin in immediately. Later applications may be considered at the discretion of the search committee.
Specific Responsibilities (including but not limited to) :
- Development of new beamline optics, diagnostic and ultrafast pump-probe methodologies, including future nano-probe and imaging capabilities.
- Support experimental user operation of LCLS, emphasizing the X-ray Pump Probe and X-ray Coherent Scattering instruments.
- Contribute to developing new scientific capabilities and directions utilizing the unique capabilities of the LCLS-II HE upgrade.
- Conduct and publish original scientific research.
