Position Overview :

The Instrumentation Division of the Technology Innovation directorate at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a talented Staff Engineer to contribute to characterization, development and calibration of state-of-the-art electronics systems used in a variety of experiments and facilities. This department develops cutting edge electronics for research facilities around the world and in space.

The work will include science, engineering concept development and hands-on work with detectors systems, including but not limited to detector characterization, detector calibration, detector integration to user facilities Data Acquisition Systems and Detector Optimization towards user's experimental goals. These tasks will be performed by the selected engineer in collaboration with a cross disciplinarily team. SLAC has broad engineering and technical support, but there will be a need for a wide range of work ranging from concept development to laboratory performance, characterization and calibration testing, to electronics and software development, to on-site commissioning. This position requires great flexibility in doing whatever is needed for a successful project.

This work involves solving problems no one has ever solved before. There will be lots of opportunities for technical discussions, but in the end the person who takes this job will have responsibility for finding the solutions. As a detector staff engineer you will be part of the Edge Computing Systems department . Members of this department provide end-to-end electrical and software solutions for the laboratory and external sponsors that encompass unique science and engineering challenges. The department also hosts world-class competence spanning concept, design, testing and operation and maintenance of high-speed data acquisition and electrical control systems for research instrumentation. The technical scope of your work will be limited only by your own demonstrated abilities.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to on-site and hybrid work options.

Your specific responsibilities include :

  • Defining procedures and coordinating a cross-functional / cross-directorate team of detector developers, data systems engineers, and calibration experts in the iterative phases required to optimize firmware, integrated detectors in the LCLS DAQ, and define detector configuration constants and user variables to be implemented in GUIs.
  • Organizing characterization campaigns in the lab and beamtime at LCLS. This includes defining the set of measurements required for characterization aimed at both understanding behaviors and optimizing operations.
  • Devise, Develop, and Test calibration procedures based on measurement data and user feedback (after transfer to operation), providing feedback to the cross-functional team for additional optimization or future developments.
  • Transfer procedures for operation to the Ops team.
  • Report about activities of the team during reviews

To be successful in this position you will bring :

  • Bachelor's degree in electronics, physics or related fields and at least 4 years of experience in the following areas.
  • X-rays detector development and scientific instrumentation

  • Conducting x-ray science experiments in synchrotrons and / or FEL user facilities
  • Calibration for x-ray detectors
  • Development of scripts to test and analyze data collected from x-ray detectors and supporting instruments
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be self-motivated.
  • Excellent communications skills and ability to work well in a research and development team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Proven project management and team leadership skills
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Masters, Doctorate or equivalent degree in electronics, physics or related fields is a plus.

    The expected pay range for this position is $140,000 to $207,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory / Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

    Salary : $140,000 - $207,000
