Position Overview

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a talented Industrial Controls Engineer to support the Electronics Engineering Division (EED) in the Accelerator Directorate. The EED is responsible for electronics subsystems for all accelerators and many test facilities throughout SLAC. The successful candidate will bring to the division a diversity of skills relevant to electrical engineering and industrial controls in support of the world¿s most powerful free electron laser.

Opportunities for this position include the development of controls applications using Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley PLCs, working with industrial equipment, and supporting a wide range of technical equipment. Gather requirements from hardware engineers, software engineers, physicists and operators. Produce requirements and design specifications and perform associated reviews. Present and communicate effectively with users, team members and management. Investigate new technologies. Deploy, commission and support robust, production level control solutions and software applications. Rapidly respond to and follow through with solutions for issues encountered with operating subsystems.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include

• Contribute to Rapid Response Teams by identifying and quickly resolving diverse technical issues that may arise within the Accelerator Directorate, and particularly EED.
• Participate in the development, integration, and the operational support for various accelerator control subsystems implemented with a broad variety of controllers and software.
• Develop PLC software, integrate with controls hardware, develop control interfaces, Input / Output Controllers (IOCs) and control screens.
• Contribute to software infrastructure in support of various control systems.
• Configuration control and documentation of control system hardware and software
• Troubleshoot electrical issues.
• Startup of control systems.
  
  

Note: This is a 24-month fixed term position with the possibility of extension or conversion to regular continuing position contingent on project fundings.

To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring

• Bachelor¿s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, physics or related field with two years relevant hands-on experience in industrial controls, software, and electrical troubleshooting.
• Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and programming tools.
• Ability to integrate systems, end-to-end from sensor to actuator including the relevant software for visualization in a remote control room.
• Demonstrated knowledge with programming/scripting languages such as ladder logic, structured text, C/C , MATLAB, Python.
• Demonstrated knowledge on programming Human Machine Interfaces.
• Strong problem-solving skills, independent decision making, and ability to work in a team environment.
• Experience authoring technical documentation, specifications, schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Demonstrated safety-oriented behavior.

Duration: Fixed Term

The expected pay range for this position is $116,000 to $170,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
