Position Overview :

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Research Associates to join the Plasma Acceleration Group in the Accelerator Directorate.

The Plasma Acceleration Group develops and executes experiments in high-gradient plasma acceleration using the unique facilities at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. FACET - Facilities for Accelerator science and Experimental Test beams at SLAC will study plasma acceleration, using short, intense pulses of electrons and positrons from the first 2km of the SLAC linac. The successful candidate will work with the physicists, postdocs, and graduate students from SLAC and external collaborators to develop and conduct experiments at FACET.

Your specific responsibilities include :

  • Develop the theory of high-gradient particle acceleration in plasma wakefield accelerators.
  • Develop experimental apparatus and measurement techniques to test the theories and models.
  • Operate accelerator physics experiments and associated apparatus including, but not limited laser systems, electron beams, data acquisition hardware and software.

Note : This is a two-year fixed term position with the possibility of extension. Research Associates are engaged with the design, support, operation and / or scientific exploitation of the major programs of the laboratory, under the guidance of their scientific supervisor. They are expected to work with a significant degree of independence on one or more specific tasks in support of the research program, frequently interacting with the laboratory's scientific community.

To be successful in this position you will have :

  • Ph.D. in physics, electrical engineering, or related technical fields
  • Demonstrated research background in experimental physics
  • Strong analytical and computation skills in applied electromagnetism.
  • Strong technical skills in both Gaussian and electron beam optics
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Additional characteristics that are highly desirable include :

  • Knowledge of plasma physics is highly desirable
  • Experience configuring, aligning, and operating ultrafast lasers systems is a plus.

    The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 - $100,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory / Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

    Salary : $70,000 - $100,000
