SLAM Tampa is seeking a dynamic and dedicated AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Elective Teacher to inspire and support middle school students in their pursuit of academic success and college readiness. The AVID Elective Teacher will implement the AVID system, providing direct instruction in academic and organizational skills, fostering a college-going culture, and empowering students to become self-advocates. The ideal candidate will be passionate about student success, possess strong instructional skills, and demonstrate a commitment to equity and access for all students.
Responsibilities:
- Implement the AVID Curriculum:
- Deliver engaging and rigorous AVID elective lessons that focus on WICOR strategies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading).
- Teach students effective note-taking, study skills, time management, and test-taking strategies.
- Facilitate collaborative study groups (Tutorials) and monitor student progress.
- Integrate college and career exploration activities into the curriculum.
- Foster a College-Going Culture:
- Promote high expectations and a belief in the potential of all students.
- Organize and facilitate college visits, guest speaker presentations, and college awareness activities.
- Encourage students to develop a strong sense of academic identity and self-efficacy.
- Help students understand the requirements for college and post secondary success.
- Provide Academic Support and Guidance:
- Monitor student academic progress and provide individualized support as needed.
- Collaborate with content area teachers to ensure alignment between AVID strategies and classroom instruction.
- Serve as an advocate for students and support their academic and personal growth.
- Help students develop strong executive functioning skills.
- Build Strong Relationships:
- Establish positive and supportive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Communicate regularly with parents about student progress and AVID activities.
- Participate in AVID site team meetings and professional development opportunities.
- Work in collaboration with the AVID coordinator to ensure fidelity to the AVID program.
- Maintain Accurate Records:
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress.
- Utilize data to inform instruction and make adjustments as needed.
- Complete all required paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Valid state teaching certification in relevant subject area.
- Experience working with middle school students, particularly those from underserved populations.
- Knowledge of and experience with the AVID program (AVID training preferred).
- Strong instructional skills and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to equity, access, and student success.
- Ability to use technology effectively in the classroom.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with AVID Summer Bridge or AVID Excel programs.
- Experience in facilitating small groups and leading collaborative activities.
- Knowledge of current best practices in middle school education.

Pay: $49,700.00 - $72,500.00 per year
