POSITION PURPOSE / JOB SUMMARY

  • As a vital part of the SLO Classical Academy team, a Teacher is responsible for providing effective and engaging instruction in line with the classical tradition and unique qualities of the school. The Teacher is to provide a safe, dynamic environment for students and is to build and lead supportive partnerships with their students’ parents and/or caregivers. They are also to serve as active participants in the community, be contributors to the team, and embrace SLOCA’s mission, vision and core values.

JOB STRUCTURE AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • The structure of a Teacher’s job depends on contracted specifics (days worked, hours worked, etc).
  • The Teacher reports first to their Lead Teacher and/or Department Lead; then to the Executive Director.
  • The Teacher interacts with their team members (leveled, subject-specific), the Lead Team and other support staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required:
  • Except under unique circumstances, teaching credential and/or equivalent work experience required.
  • Education and/or 2 years experience in specified area (level, subjects taught, etc.) required.
  • Familiarity with classical education is desirable.
  • Technology - Knowledgeable with Word, Pages, Excel, Google, etc.; Mac literacy desirable.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide quality instruction and learning opportunities for SLOCA students in the contracted classes/areas.
  • To do so in a manner to meet the educational guidelines and objectives as laid out by SLOCA’s approach to education.
  • To do so by providing a safe learning environment for all students.
  • To do so by adhering to all legal standards for teachers.
  • To do so by adhering to SLOCA’s Professional Code of Conduct.
  • As a team, oversee SLOCA@home when offered, including providing content, managing Teacher’s Assistant, and input on big projects and final assessments.
  • Spend a reasonable amount of time out-of-class in curricula development, lesson planning, and preparing to provide in-class services..
  • While some of this work will be done individually, working as a team is an essential part of being a Teacher. Teachers must prioritize planning and meeting with their team and contribute to their team equally (as they progress as a teacher).
  • Spend a reasonable amount of time providing care and training to parents and communicating well with parents and other staff.
  • Teachers have 48 hours to reply to parent and staff emails; however, communication about their “system” for responding should be communicated regularly to avoid confusion.
  • Teachers also must allow 48 hours for others to respond to him or her; if a response is required earlier, the teacher will take responsibility for making that clear.
  • Teachers should be continually providing care and training in their communication - on classical education, on why we choose curricula and projects, etc.
  • Teachers should read the Weekly Updates in order to stay aware of what is happening at the school.
  • On a trimester basis, teachers should document and communicate student progress through our progress reports, using both narrative and skills assessment categories.
  • Attend and take part in various school events, including, but not limited to:
  • Campus tours
  • 2 history celebrations per year
  • 1 math or science celebration per year
  • 1 fundraiser event per year
  • 2 Open House Events per year
  • Occasional additional events as requested by Team Teacher or Executive Director.
  • Attend and actively participate in necessary student-support meetings, including, but not limited to:
  • Classroom Connection meetings, as decided by the teaching team.
  • A minimum of 2 conferences over the course of the year should be initiated by the Teacher (generally 1st and 2nd trimesters); may request additional conferences; must be willing to also meet for additional requested conferences.
  • Family Action Plan meetings.
  • Occasional IEP meetings.
  • Attend required meetings, including, but not limited to:
  • Summer in-service week.
  • Team SLOCA meetings, on average 2x/month.
  • Leveled team meetings, as scheduled with that team.
  • Department meetings (such as science, math, etc.).
  • Actively engage in enrollment and re-enrollment
  • Pursue and develop both strong and struggling families for retention.
  • Help families think long-term and see the sum of the parts in classical education at SLOCA.
  • Work with Admissions Director regarding families of concern.
  • Engage in professional development
  • In addition to required trainings/meetings, teachers should be working towards developing professionally. This might include things like reading about Classical Education, taking Singapore training courses, reading the classics, seeking specific mentoring, etc.
  • Adhere to, model and reinforce the students’ Code of Conduct.
  • Emphasis on modeling to the children is part of this work. Teachers must be familiar with the Code of Conduct for students and be committed to modeling it for them.
  • Teachers must also be willing to reinforce the Code of Conduct with students, seeing themselves as a responsible party in helping students fulfill the Code’s requirements.
  • Dress Code - neatness and modesty are unalterable requirements; staff may wear open-toed shoes.
  • Maintain room order and cleanliness:
  • Teachers are expected to maintain a good degree of neatness and cleanliness in their classrooms, for safety reasons, to make sharing rooms more manageable, and to represent the school well.
  • Rooms are to be neat and clean prior to the teacher leaving for the day.
  • Rooms are to be left neat and clean at the end of the year, within one week of the last day of school.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Staff members are expected to adhere to all Administrative Directives as well as any applicable SLOCA Policies including those specifically outlined in the Employee Manual.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds on a limited basis. Able to sit at a desk or in meetings for long periods of time and move about campuses easily. Able to work irregular hours if needed for meetings, etc.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,000.00 - $50,000.00 per year

  • Monday to Friday
