Job Overview
Community Distribution Coordinators play a key role in distributing fresh, nutritious food throughout SLO County, working directly with the community, non-profit agency partners, and SLO Food Bank volunteers. A successful Community Distribution Coordinator is an organized, flexible, people-person who is passionate about serving our neighbors in need and enjoys working outdoors and being physically active.
In a typical day, the team of Community Distribution Coordinators are ensuring that:
- Community members are served equitably and with dignity.
- Food is safely driven to distribution locations throughout SLO County in refrigerated box trucks.
- Data is collected and entered accurately.
- Volunteers are engaged appropriately and effectively.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities
Program Coordination
- Professionally representing the SLO Food Bank with clients, volunteers, and community partners at distribution sites, and in the office with high-quality customer service.
- Coordinate volunteers at Neighborhood Food Distribution sites to ensure exceptional client service.
- Collaborating and connecting with nonprofit agency partners, clients, and vendors.
- Maintaining safe, clean, and organized operations at all deliveries and Neighborhood Food Distribution sites.
- Coordinating with all SLO Food Bank staff to organize and streamline internal systems of communication and logistics.
- Assisting with monitoring and evaluation activities, including site reviews to ensure compliance with all program guidelines.
- Collaborating with Community Distribution Coordinator team to ensure daily preparedness, timeliness, and excellent service.
- Facilitating training opportunities with volunteers and staff regarding information on federal program protocols, compliance, and customer service.
Administrative Support
- Maintaining and updating the SLO Food Bank Volunteer web portal and communicating with volunteers as needed via phone and email.
- Collecting, organizing, and filing completed paperwork from program sites.
- Assisting with data entry related to program sites as needed.
Operational Support
- Assisting with SLO Food Bank onsite services as needed.
- Assisting with necessary operational functions as assigned.
- Participating in safe use of all equipment, including forklifts and electric pallet jacks, with onsite training provided.
Qualifications
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Strong cultural competence: ability to build positive relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders including donors, volunteers for faith-based, grassroots organizations and residents seeking emergency food assistance.
- Bilingual (Spanish conversational fluency) highly preferred but not required.
- Strong computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Comfortable with onsite training for driving 16 to 24-foot box trucks, forklifts, and motorized pallet jacks. Experience operating box trucks or similar vehicles preferred but not required.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License, clean driving record, and proof of insurance.
- Reliable transportation to work.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be willing to travel throughout SLO, Santa Barbara and Monterey Counties with each day ending at the warehouse in San Luis Obispo. Benefits

Work Conditions/Physical Demands
The position is based out of the SLO Food Bank’s offices at 1180 Kendall Road, San Luis Obispo, CA, and works alongside a dedicated group of approximately 33 staff and thousands of volunteers. Position includes office and outdoor work, including extended time operations equipment.

The ability to stand for extended periods of time; the ability to see details at within a few feet of the observer; to lift, carry, and load up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, climb, and crouch repeatedly throughout the day.
- Long-term standing, walking and kneeling required.
- Driving for many hours in a day.
- Must be capable of weighing and counting items and transferring those results into a computer database.
- Variable work environment: work is conducted both indoors and outdoors with varying environmental conditions. Indoor facilities are kept cold, so warm clothing is required. Noise level varies from quiet office environment to very noisy warehouse. Exhaust and dust may be present in the warehouse receiving area.
