Join the fantastic team at Slumber Falls Camp! (FSF) operates nestled on the Guadalupe River on a quiet and peaceful 20-acre property. Founded in 1958, SFC provides a welcoming Christian summer camp and year-round retreat setting for children, families, churches, and organizations throughout the region.
The Kitchen Staff will report to the Manager of Operations and manage the food service program offering tasty and nutritious foods filled with love to our year-round retreat program guests and summer campers. This is an on call position (mostly weekends) with varying hours from August to May and full-time in June and July. Retreat season has no guarantee of weekly hours as schedule is determined by retreat bookings.
- This position provides the opportunity to take initiative and be creative in developing well-balanced, nutritious recipes and menus. The position will grow as the camp’s programs grow.

Summary:
The Kitchen staff oversees a kitchen operation that serves Slumber Falls campers, volunteers, families, and staff at summer camp (June & July), weekend retreat groups (Fall, Winter, and Spring), and special events. This team member serves as the primary food service leader who plans menus, orders food, prepares and serves meals, and manages the kitchen/dining environment, with the goal of providing nutritious, appealing, and appropriate food for up to 100 plates per meal.
Schedule:
Willingness to work a flexible schedule is essential. This position generally works:
- Two or less weekends per month during fall, winter, and spring. Weekdays as groups request food service.
- Sunday through Friday during summer
Qualifications:
- 2 years of professional food service experience with demonstrated ability to plan menus and manage food product orders for group meals for 25-100 guests or campers. Cafeteria style or buffet experience.
- Experience preparing a wide range of delicious meals, using a variety of cooking techniques, and accommodating diverse dietary needs.
- Highly organized paired with experience managing teams in kitchen operations.
- Current food handlers permit and knowledge of standard health and safety standards and regulations. Ability to lift 40 lbs and work on your feet for extended periods.
Preferred qualifications:
- School, restaurant, or other cafeteria food service experience and ability to serve meals for large and small groups.
- Kitchen leadership experience preferred. Flexibility to work with a group’s food requests and cook for a broad range of ages and tastes.
- Passion for working with children, youth, and families and serving a broad and diverse range of guests from different backgrounds and lived experiences.
- Flexibility and good humor to be part of a growing team and support SFC’s commitment to hospitality and welcoming camp spirit to all.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Plan nutritious, appealing menus from whole food ingredients and curate a collection of scaled recipes that meet menu, dietary, and budget needs. Accommodate dietary needs with appealing, appropriate alternatives.
- Purchase, store, and manage inventory of food products with attention to quality, cost-effectiveness, and safety.
- Develop and implement systems and processes for smooth, sustainable administration of camp food service operations, including creating roles and checklists, writing instructions and guidelines, creating training, and keeping records.
- Lead meal preparation, service, and clean-up for up to three meals and two snacks per day.
- Manage kitchen equipment and supplies and overall dining hall space for organization, function, cleanliness, and hospitality.
- Collaborate with camp programs, operations, and facilities for planning, scheduling, and promotion of food service operations.
- Ensure a high level of health and safety, cleanliness, and food hygiene, including managing compliance with state health department regulations, ACA standards, and SFC policies and procedure
- Maintain a welcoming and purposeful environment to ensure a positive guest experience. Demonstrate and promote a climate of courtesy, respect, and professionalism to coworkers, volunteers, campers, and guests.

The pay range for this position is $16-20/hour DOE. Start date is immediate.
