Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following :

  • Core responsibility will be to install, maintain, and repair company’s Fiber infrastructure.
  • Installs and repairs all wiring / cabling and hardware required to support Fiber based communications services.
  • Learns and applies safety measures relating to motor vehicle operations and other field related matters.
  • Installs and repairs all wiring / cabling and hardware required to support all company communications services.
  • Installs and maintains fiber optic networking and transport hardware.
  • Executes changes in plant conditions as well as minor plant changes and extensions.
  • Effectively communicates with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel regarding underground facilities.
  • Uses assigned equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel regarding underground facilities.
  • Performs light excavation with a shovel to expose buried cables, when necessary.
  • Operates and maintains HESCO (manhole assistance trailer), ladders, hand, and power tools.
  • Responsible for following, supporting, and enforcing all internal control processes and procedures and observing company safety policies always.
  • Contributes to various projects working with minimal supervision, including aiding other departments and team members, as directed.

Qualifications – The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate :

  • Competency and experience in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook; ability to work with cloud-based and mobile technology.
  • Effective verbal, written, and people skills.
  • Eagerness to adapt existing processes to new, improved systems.
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management, initiative, attention to detail, follow through to completion.
  • Ability to multi-task and accomplish tasks in fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate cross functionally with other teams, as well as customers and contractors.
  • Extensive fusion splicing experience required; must be able to perform small to large scale splicing repairs (up to 1728 fiber count); must have Loose Tube and Ribbon splicing experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of Telecommunications concepts, FTTH, fiber optic, and transport systems.
  • Ability to review and comprehend cable drawings, engineering designs, and identify underground cable infrastructure.
  • Ability to install and troubleshoot DWDM carrier grade circuits.
  • Ability to troubleshoot Networking systems using experience and test equipment.
  • Fluent in universal communications color code for both Copper and Fiber infrastructures.
  • Fluent in operating test equipment used to maintain Fiber Optic facilities and subscriber drops (TDR, OTDR, Fiber Scopes).
  • Working Conditions

  • Outdoor working environment with seasonal heat, cold, and other inclement weather conditions.
  • Driving company assigned vehicle to / from work sites in a safe and responsible manner during adverse weather conditions, heavy / light traffic, or at night.
  • Work sites include manholes, hand holes, etc. and will involve extensive walking on diverse types of terrain, working around objects and machinery in construction areas, and may require confined space entry and ability to work in elevated areas.
  • Regular use of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and tools; reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally, bending at the waist; standing and or walking for extended periods of time; lifting objects up to 50 pounds or lifting more than 75 pounds with tool aids.
  • Other Requirements

  • 5 years’ experience in installation, maintenance, splicing and troubleshooting fiber-based outside plant infrastructure and networking systems.
  • Ability to see and distinguish distinct colors, read small print, and hear / recognize audible signals.
  • Ability to safely utilize step and extension ladders (up to 25 ft.) or other equipment at higher elevations, as appropriate (i.e., catwalks, cell tower platforms, roof tops, man lifts, bucket trucks).
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and outside in all weather conditions and at various hours of the day / night.
  • Must be available and respond to after hour callouts, work overtime, shift, weekends, and holidays, as required, and remain in service during outages until resolved.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.
