Equipment Mechanic Trainee

Join the Indiana State Police as a civilian employee responsible for maintaining state-owned commissions in optimal mechanical condition. This position offers an opportunity to work within a dynamic team, ensuring the safety and efficiency of state vehicles.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance as needed.
• Complete assigned repair work as required.
• Notify appropriate personnel of any visible major problems.
• Keep work orders up to date.
• Order parts and maintain the garage stock room.
• Keep the area of assignment clean and orderly.
• Assist in unloading the supply truck and loading old tires, empty oil drums, etc.
• Periodically complete training for new procedures and skills needed to maintain state-owned commissions.
  
  

Duties

• Perform repairs or preventive maintenance on accessories, antennas, camera systems, deck lights, flashlight systems, fuses, light bars, mirror lights, motorcycle and trailer wiring, computer docking stations, and radio equipment.
• Maintain various logs.
• Use diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and find problems.
• Test drive vehicles to ensure they are in working order.
• Perform building custodian duties as required by the Division or District Commander.
• Perform other duties as required.
  
  

Essential Functions And Job Requirements

• High school graduate or possess a GED certificate.
• Valid Indiana driver's license.
• Ability to lift and move heavy automotive objects.
• Ability to communicate and follow instructions.
• Ability to distinguish and determine colors and sounds.
• Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work in close and confined areas.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to diagnose problems on commissions.
• Operate assigned tools and equipment and use automotive shop manuals.
• Complete repair jobs including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computer tasks.
• Use diagnostic testing equipment to troubleshoot and find problems.

• Collaborate with Department personnel.
• Work with auto dealers, service departments, body shops, and other professionals.
  
  

Physical Effort and Work Environment

• Work is performed in a garage environment.
• Requires standing on cement for extended periods, working in close and confined areas, with exposure to hazardous materials and potentially dangerous equipment.
• Involves sitting, standing, crouching, kneeling, and periodic lifting of heavy objects.
