We are a fully integrated sand supply and services company, offering complete sand, logistics, storage, and management solutions to our customers with our in-basin trans-loading terminals and our smartsystem storage capabilities. We own and operate premium frac sand mines and related processing facilities in Wisconsin and Illinois, which have access to three Class I rail lines, allowing us to deliver products substantially anywhere in the United States and Canada.
We are currently looking for a Production and Logistics Supervisor to join our team.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for leading the production and logistics team in operating in a safe, cost-effective and environmentally controlled manner and overseeing all trucking, transloading and railcar shipments to meet customer needs. The Production and Logistics Supervisor is the first point of contact for questions, issues, or concerns among the operating crew. The position is responsible for improving the skills of employees through training and development along with minimizing the operational costs and pursuing efficiency and productivity improvements.
The position will work under the supervision of the Plant Manager; however, will require taking direction from other Smart Sand Inc. managers.
This position is based primarily at our Ottawa, IL facility.
Production Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure efficient and informative lineouts occur daily.
- Complete workplace examinations, communicate issues, and direct how to remove hazards
- Ensure employees are following the safety policies and procedures and implement new policies when issued.
- Understand plant operation, determine methods of increasing safety, quality, and production.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment by educating and directing employees on the use of all equipment and resources.
- Responsible to meet production goals, complete paperwork, and communicate with other supervisors and management.
- Advise plant operators on how to maximum utilization and ensure they are running to capacity.
- Works cooperatively to comply with facility-wide environmental and quality management systems.
- Achieves desired results through effective leadership and appropriate influence while adhering to established policies and procedures.
- Models and reinforces safety as a top priority of the organization.
- Supervise projects when plants are down and ensure the work is done as safely and quickly as possible.
- Ensure all required paperwork completed on shift.
- Attend monthly supervisor meetings and provide constructive feedback on topics discussed
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Logistics Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Manages and oversees the Peru transload.
- Effectively directs rail yard team including the oversight of the development of a safety training program.
- Coordinates activities and rail car movements.
- Works closely with Production teams to ensure continued efficiency in operational targets.
- Works closely with Plant Manager to decide which product best fits which customer.
- Problem solves with Plant Manager regarding potential improvements in the loading and/or unloading cycles of their shipments.
- Maintains awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure all rail safety.
- Works cooperatively to comply with facility-wide environmental and quality management systems.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

- Listen to, identify solution and recommend actions for employee grievances and continuous improvement ideas
- Effectively trains, coaches, disciplines and develops employees to achieve and maintain positive working relationships.
- Communicates with other Supervisors and members of management.
- Must be able to effectively enforce systems, policies, and procedures
- Accomplishing work results; establishing priorities; monitoring progress; resolving problems; reporting results of the processing flow.
- Supervises production equipment and logistics staff.
- Participates in performance reviews with plant management.
- Ensure you and your employees maintain highest housekeeping standards.
- Schedules and meets deadlines, adheres to policies and procedures and maintains a good attendance/tardiness record.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- MSHA training and experience.
- Knowledge and skill to operate basic heavy equipment pieces.
- Prior experience as a Plant Operator in both Wet and Dry plants.
- Prior experience of logistics, trucking, transloading and/or railroad logistics.
- Must be able to operate locomotives.
- Valid driver license and clean Motor Vehicle Record Check (MVR).
- Previous leadership experience.

- Experience with Microsoft Office programs required.
- Excellent leadership and people skills.
- Must be a self-starter and work with minimal supervision.
- Good judgment is required.
- Must be adaptable and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Must have high safety standards for self and others.
- Must be able to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate effectively with others.
- Must be willing to work any assigned shift, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Basic literacy and mathematical skills.
